Windows Server Backup for Hyper-V

I just wondered does anyone use Windows Server Backup to backup their Hyper-V VM's? If so does it work well and restore ok?

 

Also if you had a virtual DC and the physical host died, if you were to then restore that virtual DC from backup and restore it into Hyper-V on a new host would it boot fine and everyone be able to login fine as before or would it cause issues being restored or being put on a new host?

 

Just trying to do some research before taking the plunge.

I don't use Windows backup, but I use free Veeam to backup my VMs. Works great.

 

Restoring the VM wouldn't care where you restored it to, so long as you check it has a network card assigned to it, which it may not if the hardware is different.

we use redstor to back up vms, but you can restore the VM regardless of the host ive found

+1 for Windows Image Backup - I've found it does VM machines and physical servers flawlessly; but with two major drawbacks;

 

1. You can only do daily backups that overwrite, unless you use scheduled tasks https://www.ubackup.com/windows-server/windows-server-2012-backup-schedule-weekly-3889.html

2. there is a limit of about 20TB for larger drives

Thanks guys, i was just unsure on the ease of restoring and whether AD etc would have any issues being rolled back.

I have been doing some testing and installed the free Veeam on a VM to back up another VM, i'm not sure if it was how i'd set it up but found it would randomly fail on odd days and couldn't see why.

Is this still the same on 2016? I've been testing VM's and backed one up via WSB in 2016 and it is letting me go back a week and showing the hyper-v VM available for restore on that date? The backup job was setup using the standard wizard in WSB.

I found Windows Server Backup took way too long. I still have it as a backup but dont use it.

 

Instead I take Exports of each VM from HyperV Manager. I find it a lot quicker to get a machine back up and running.

 

I even tried it on another computer with completly different spec and got the VM to boot up fine.
