Relocating CCTV

So a long time ago before I was here the school had Hikvision CCTV put in and it all goes back to one office.

This is great from a security point of view but with Behaviour mentors needing access it means they have to constantly disrupt the office and it is quite cramped in there already!

 

Whoever did the work was shockingly bad, the cable runs are so tight you cant even move the NVR without stretching everything and the terminations are poor.

Cameras are POE from the NVR. Not currently connected to the school network.

 

I'd like to relocate the NVR or find a way to let users access the CCTV without going into the office.

 

I'm reluctant to join it to the main school network.

 

Anyone have any ideas?

We have our CCTV system on its own VLAN connected to a Windows server running Milestone XProtect. You can install the client to who needs it and there's an app as well. Just remember to update your CCTV PIA for the extra staff who will be using it without your supervision.

We have a 53 camera Hikvision system on the main network (on its own VLAN) and it doesn't really make any impact on network performance at all. If it's an NVR (i.e. networked recorder) then it should have a web interface where you can watch live and playback. Our recorder lives in the server room and is only accessed remotely via the browser.

 

In your situation if you don't/can't do that I'd probably put a PoE switch in where all the camera cables come back to, and connect that to the network on its own VLAN, then move the recorder elsewhere connected to the same VLAN.

Our cameras are shockingly old and are not networked. Instead, they're individually cabled back to the controller unit. We relocated the unit last year due to security concerns, but had to pay quite a lot of money to the maintenance company to extend the cables to the new location, which is a locked cupboard. The controller itself is networked, so the site team can connect to it via the provided software from their workstations in their office and can view the feeds without going to the physical unit.

We have the same issue, all cameras are connected to the hikvision cctv unit then one network cable running from the unit to switch in the main office which I have assigned a static ip so i can see the cctv system on our network, no strain on network as all recording records to cctv unit. I type in the ipaddress in edge and log in and can see system from any internal PC, i have office staff, management and site with access from their office via their own login. saves me a job looking at footage.

Am I right in thinking (?) that the Hikvision ports are all just POE IP ports?

 

If so you could just extend out of one of them to a regular POE switch that stays where the current NVR is, and move the NVR elsewhere via a single CAT5.
