Hi, I was just wondering where we stood with software and licences before making decisions of our future boards. We have a promethium boards (the older style one with the blue border and pen) with active inspire which we love and would like to keep using activinspire as a school. We need to replace all our boards though due to age and the cost of the projector upkeep)

Q 1. If we replace them all with the newer promethium boards, do we get the full version of Activinspire for free? (for every computer or just the ones attached to a board?)

Q2. If we get different boards (we may get second hand ones given to us for free or low cost as we’re on a budget but they won’t be promethium) can we still use our activinspire that we have on the computers or if not, can we use the free personal version of activinspire (I read some where we can use the free version on a computer but not if the computer is attached to a board)

Any other information you can pass on about licences and what right/wrong will be helpful, as we want to do it right and knowing what’s right will help us make our future decision on what we buy or get given.

(I have posted this on promethium world too, not sure if it was on the right place but I know this site gets more traffic and hopefully more advice for me)

Thank you

Hi NMarks,

As to your questions about licensing for ActivInspire.

Q1. Depends on the board/panel that is bought but there is generally an ActivInspire Pro license with a new unit.

Q2. The ActivInspire license is valid until you get rid of the device. Once the hardware is gone so is the license. Unless a site license was purchased.

Here is a link to the EULA for the Personal version of ActivInspire:

https://support.prometheanworld.com/wp-content/uploads/dlm_uploads/pers-eula-en.pdf

From the EULA you are correct it cannot be used with 3rd party equipment. Here is the section from the EULA:

4.2 Restrictions of Use with Third-Party Interactive Display Devices: Unless otherwise agreed inwriting by Promethean, the Software is only permitted to be operated with PrometheanEquipment or the Promethean Certified Equipment. The Software is not permitted to beoperated with any other 3rd party (non-Promethean branded) Interactive Display Devices. Youmay only use the Software in conjunction with Promethean Equipment or Promethean CertifiedEquipment and on a computer owned and or controlled by You. THE USE OF THE SOFTWAREWITH ANY THIRD-PARTY INTERACTIVE DISPLAY DEVICES IS CONSIDERED A BREACH OF THIS EULA. IfYou wish to use the Software with any third-party Interactive Display Devices then you mustpurchase a License for the Professional Edition of the ActivInspire software.

Hope this helped.

That has really helped - Thank you.

I've gone round in circles trying to see a cost of a licence. I don't suppose anyone knows what it may cost. Either a site licence or per board (My unconfirmed research has hinted at £500 per board, could it really be this expensive?)

I looked at this 4 years ago I was quoted £500 per screen. Some schools will see the cost and decide to go with Promethean screens as it works out cheaper. Others will turn a blind eye to the EULA and go with third party screens and still use Inspire. We went with Promethean and have been very happy with them.

If you keep the old boards in a lockup and use your current boards on new non Promethean kit does that tick the box for being legit?

I haven't had any quotes yet, knowing that keeping Activinspire is a school priority I thought I'd research the legalities first before looking for quotes for other brands if we know we need to keep to promethiums. Thanks for the replies everyone. I have emailed them for a quote of how much the licence will cost per board, no answer yet but it's only been a few days.

No because the licence only covers you if you're using it with the Promethean board. Just having some boards in storage isn't sufficient.

Its usually £500-600 per screen if using another model board.

Promethean also offer a cloud based system called ClassFlow, works well now, worth a look.
