Just about to order some iPads - seller wants DEP info - need to reply asap

We are in the process of purchasing some iPads and the seller needs our DEP info to enrol them.

We have never had iPads at this primary school

When I look for Apple DEP I am also noticing Apple School Manager, are these the same thing, do I need to sign up for both, if so which should I sign up for first?

In the Apple School Manager it lists this -

Add device suppliers to Apple School Manager

If you purchase devices through participating Apple Authorized Resellers or carriers, you can add supplier information in Apple School Manager, so orders placed with that reseller or carrier automatically appear in Apple School Manager. Before you can assign devices, you must have entered your appropriate Apple customer number and communicated your Organization ID to a participating Apple Authorized Reseller or carrier and added their Reseller ID to your account. For more information, see Manage device suppliers in the Apple School Manager User Guide.

So does this mean the reseller should have asked for the School Manager customer number, not DEP number.

You will need to enrol into ASM before you can give them your Org ID and add their reseller ID.

Sounds like great planning if you are doing this just before you are ordering them...?

Well originally I thought they were getting laptops or chromebooks, then the other day I get an email from the head saying she is getting Ipads.

OK, so the iPads are currently out of stock for another week or so. I have given them our Apple ID and entered the resellers ID, think that's all I need until they get enrolled by the reseller.

I believe the school (primary) just want a single account setup on each tablet, can this be achieved using just ASM or do we also need an MDM?

Done today, now to read up on how ASM works :0P

There's a lot to get your head* around, especially if you're not familiar with Apple. Have you decided which MDM you are going to use?

(*And I don't mean your headteacher; she will be expecting them to 'just work'.)

EDIT: Between starting this reply, getting called away, and posting it, you've already answered this question! +1 for Mosyle.

By apple ID, im presuming you mean your ORG ID?

That should be enough to get you started.

You will need an MDM service of some sort to manage them from there. you wont need accounts as you can device assign apps you purchase.

If its a cheap as possible deployment, grab mosyle and follow the setup path and it SHOULD get you from start to finish step by step once youre setup.

yes ORG

I have just applied for Mosley.

EDIT - Mosyle

This month has been a killer month, needed to enrol / learn about Chromebooks / G Suite and now learn / enrol iPads and ASM, lol.

Once its all setup apples onboarding is a dream to be fair. Unbox, hold a working ipad next to another and share the wifi key, next next next - setup

Id hold off deploying any apps until you have everything enrolled though, once they start downloading they can be a bit greedy

In ASM apps section it is asking if the school is 'Taxable / not VAT registered' or 'VAT registered'.

Does anyone know which this would be for an LEA school? I believe its not VAT registered but wanted to double check.

You are VAT registered as LEA a school, you would use your LEA's VAT number.

I just stubbled on another post where someone asked a similar question and this was the reply from an accountant.

LEA schools are not VAT Registered. The supplies that they make are normally either exempt or outside the scope of VAT. They do however receive a delegated budget and the local authority can recover the VAT incurred under section 33 of the VAT Act 1994. Indirectly therefore schools can recover VAT that is charged to them.

I'll ask our bursar and see what she says.

OK, someone has just come back to me via email and said that if we are not using different accounts on the iPads we can probably make do without Mosyle as an MDM, as we can just use ASM to deploy the apps.

Obviously I know very little about either system. What would you say is the main selling point for Mosyle over ASM, for a very small deployment of iPads without user accounts.

Sorry for the noob question :0)

If your very small number is larger than 1, then it's worth going for an MDM solution. Once set up life is just so simple. App deployments, profiles for security / configuration all pushed over the air with no fuss. I happily manage 200 ipads in less time than it takes me to look after a set of 16 laptops (windows).

It's also unlikely that a small ipad deployment will stay a small ipad deployment, they have a tendency to multiply!

MDM and ASM are not the same product.

ASM is like your AD for managed accounts(if you use users), your volume purchasing portal and DEP - DEP being the king of kings here!

It requires an MDM service to then leverage the above into a usable service - Without supervised ipads you lose all security and control and make them an absolute nightmare to manage as above >1 MDM

As above ASM is not an MDM... Otherwise every iPad requires a personal Apple ID and any apps and content are owned by the user, you have to manually buy content on every iPad

Ok so I have ASM and Mosyle setup with push cert etc.

When the iPads get delivered will they automatically appear in ASM / Mosyle if we have told the reseller our DEP info, or do I still need to login on each iPad and add them?

As you've given your org ID to the reseller, then you also need their reseller ID and add this to ASM,, guide below..

If you have set up what's know as a "pre stage enrolment" profile then devices get enrolled into MDM when activated and connected, if this is 1: 1 you can also add authentication credentials to set up process such as AD/Google login in to then automatically assign the iPad to a user.

I did already enter the reseller info :0)

Is this done in ASM.

I ticked a box in ASM to automatically list devices in Mosyle when they get added to ASM, is this correct?

BTW, thanks for all the help so far :0)

f this is 1: 1 you can also add authentication credentials to set up process such as AD/Google login in to then automatically assign the iPad to a user.
EDIT, these are shared devices, I would like without any apple id if possible. Edited by TwistedHelixis
