Updating Google Chrome to latest version.

Noticing multiple copies of GoogleUpdater.exe open on our Windows 10 Edu build.

 

Seems to be preventing Google Chrome from updating to latest version.

 

Error is "An error occurred while checking for updates: The updater is currently running. Refresh in a minute to check again."

 

 

You have to End Task all the running GoogleUpdaters then reopen Chrome and it then updates.

 

Annoying.

 

How is everyone handling Google Chrome updates - letting it do it's own thing like this or more controlled with only rolling out certain versions via GPO?

I've blocked the autoupdate from running and deploy new versions through GPO.

It possibly does but something didn't work one afternoon and multiple simultaneous downloads killed internet access.

We deploy it using a GPO and let it update itself. Never run into the sorts of problems described in this thread. Every so often I'll update the deployment GPO with a new version, but always still allowing Chrome to keep itself updated once installed.

I think there's some group policy to deal with proxies and the updater. If you've got the bandwidth there's no issue. I'd switch to the new Edge where you can manage the updates via SCCM.

We push out chrome via SCCM but allow it to update itself, occasionally updating the application installer. We don't experience any issues using this method.

Self updates at all my sites, they release so may updates it's not practical to deploy new versions. I think our base installer is a few years old. Seems to update itself without issue on first run.

We believe Chrome update has just shutdown 3 of our IT Suites within a couple of minutes.

 

Only thing at the time of shutdown is the Chrome updater doing its thing.

 

I hope it doesn't happen on the other 800 PCs.
