HP ProCurve Switch 2900 for home use

I'm looking at upgrading my home network and need about 10 ports as a minimum, although if I'm putting network points in I may as well as a few more for future proofing.

 

Something like the Procurve is cheaper second hand than the cheapest new 16 port switch.

 

The thing that concerns me is software updates. Am I likely to come unstuck?

 

If so, any other recommendations?

No normally updates on HP ProCurve and Aruba *switches are completely free unlike Cisco and a few others where you need a contract/support package most of the time.

 

We are still running some HP 2650's at work and the last update on those was in 2016 but the switches are over 10 years old.

You may find it a bit noisy but you could look at getting a Noctua fan kit if you can find one that is compatible and happy to open up the case, switch powered off of course

 

I had a 2910al a few years back.

 

Update: Probably limited to switches, of course this may change :-( .

I certainly can't get at any Aruba updates without a support account in place, which may be free but haven't got that far yet. I think it involves registering the device and that only lasts for a set period.

Hmm, Maybe it is limited to the Switches?? I must admit I've not tried on any Access points but the Wireless controllers and software maybe a contract/support only available update.

I've always been able to download firmware updates for Aruba switches without having to register an account. At least, those switches that used to be Procurve or 3com, anyway.

 

Wireless stuff is a different question.

Thanks all. I just had a memory that HP had changed policy and you had to pay for updates after the initial warranty period.

Think that may still be applicable to Servers, could be wrong and servers may require a CarePack at any stage.
