UPS battery needs replacing?

Recommended Posts

We have an APC Smart UPS which currently is failing to run it's self test, when running via the control panel on the UPS itself it refuses to run. When ran via PowerChute it runs for several hours and eventually fails. Does this sound like a failing battery? it still seems to be able to support a load

Any help is greatly appreciated

The APC should tell you if it needs a battery replacement. I've got 2 at home and both have told me, I've got one complaining at the moment.

Have you by any chance got a network card in the UPS?

I disconnected the USB cable and reconnected and now it seems to pass the self test. Although Powerchute says that we're using 0 amps and 0% of the VA despite it powering our phone system and 1 server. Still refuses to run a test via the LCD though

Might be worth a quick physical check of the battery too...

I found our 'Happy' UPS which passed self tests, had a battery in it that had expanded so much, we had to use a lump hammer and crow bar to get it out! The battery had a big hole in the side in the end which it had welded itself to the case side. Had to 'persuade' the rack mount UPS case back in to shape before refitting the new batteries.
