So we have deployed edge Chromium across the site via MSI and implement the included GPO templates.

Reports came in that favourites in Edge Chromium were not saving after a logoff.

Multiple tested resulted in the following:

- By default the favourites database is stored in the local profile so it doesnt roam

- Edge chromium ignores the policy setting of sync favourites between IE and EDGE

- If the profile variable is used to store the settings in the appdata\roaming then the folder gets too large slowing down logins.

I have therefore using GPO set the appdata location to the users home directory so that it doesnt pull down/save at each logon/logoff and if have to reset a roaming profile, the favourites will still remain as stored on the network.

However, reports were revived of edge not launching at times. It has been narrowed down to being an issue if the user is logged onto more than one machine, edge will not launch, which i presume it because the first login is locking some files that stops it launching on the second machine. If they log off the first machine, edge then starts working on the second one.

How is everyone else managing the favourites for edge chromium?

Thanks.

We sync the favourites using Edge Enterprise Sync. User's are auto logged into Edge via pass through authentication on Azure AD. For this I believe you need Azure AD P1 however so not the cheapest solution but is what Microsoft recommends.

I have the favourites folder redirected (the GPO with music, video etc.) to their documents folder in a folder called favourites....... And I realize right now that edge doesn't save favourites in favourites! What?

This hasn't been pointed out by anyone yet..

Yeah thats what I mentioned. Using Edge Enterprise Sync. You need an Azure AD P1 licence to use it though.

Edit: Nevermind, these are the requirements:

  • Azure AD Premium (P1 and P2)
  • M365 Business Premium
  • Office 365 E3 and above
  • Azure Information Protection (AIP) (P1& P2)
  • All EDU subscriptions (Microsoft Apps for Students or Faculty, Exchange Online for Students or Faculty, O365 A1 or above, M365 A1 or above, or Azure Information Protection P1 or P2 for Students or Faculty)

Did anyone else encounter this? We're currently struggling with this issue too.

Not found a permanent solution yet, as long as the user closes edge on the first machine they can then lock it and use on another machine.

Would you mind sharing the GPO settings you use for this so there logged in automatically? I'm just roaming favourites to users home folder like below which works fine but would prefer the benefits of syncing there favourites, passwords, etc to the O365 cloud.

Set the roaming profile directory = ${documents}\Microsoft Edge

Enable using roaming copies for Microsoft Edge profile data = Enabled

This is a link on how to set it up: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/how-to-connect-sso

I don't have the GPOs to hand at the moment as currently self isolating so not allowed on site where we set it up. That link should give you a good start though.

No worries, thanks for the link. We already have SSO setup so sounds like its just the Edge GPOs that need setting up correctly. I will do some testing :)

I've worked out that when edge is launched, it's the 'lockfile' in the settings folder which is causing it. if you block the file from creation, edge won't open at all and cannot do a login script as it doesnt create the file until edge is launched.
