Is this backup solution adequate?

A friend of mine has a small business and they are running a win2016 server with about 10 machines.

 

All their data file shares are backed up but just wondering about taking exports of the hyper V domain controller and file server.

 

Would that be sufficient and does it matter how often these backups are taken?

 

It’s just the structure really that needs backing up so if all fails it can be re-imported and back in business again.

Any permissions set on folders?

 

Backing up servers would allow a speedier restore as no need to build and then copy data over, 1 job to restore does the lot.

 

If its literally a file share and no permissions up to you.

The Exports from HyperV work quite well.

 

I just wondered if there was any need for a set regular backup or does it not matter when restoring. Maybe it is only if there were two Domain controllers but this is just one?

As long as you have regular backups of what you need that important and in a way/format that works for you. Ideally back the whole lot up once a night or weekly depending the needs, all business are different and some can afford some data loss where as others cannot. Maybe setup a nightly sync to the cloud of the data then it might give you several days worth that could be restored.

Critical bit missing of your plan is how do you do test restores?

you need to have at least 1offline backup of some sort, if you get ransomware or targeted this could destroy all data on all network devices including sans and Nas systems. Ive known this to happen.

I set up a Windows Server 2016 test machine and tried restoring them. Worked fine.
