I suspect the people who queue up to sell us new batteries might have something to say about this...

The fact that it's 100% bunkum doesn't deter you then? It's not new, it's not efficient and it certainly won't be replacing lion/lipo any time soon in vehicles of any shape or size. Let's face some facts, when the thing they're going on about which is roughly the same mass as an 18650 lion cell is capable of a WHOPPING 100 microwatts of energy.... not sure my kids scooter is going to be going too quickly on that let alone a Tesla.

Clearly total garbage - always difficult to sell recycled nuclear waste - the marketing would be interesting

 

 

and I do wonder how recycled nuclear waste degrades into totally natural stuff

 

- which I suppose it does - if you include all the elements of the Periodic Table as natural

including the ones only ever made in a nuclear rector

 

 

so - basically - posted on the assumption that people on here would spot the flaws in the concept pretty easily

If a new battery tech story doesn't tell you where they're building the factory to make a billion of them, it's probably pointless

I have had an idea for a harvesting battery that after the inputs useful life it decays down to virtually nothing for e-bikes, have not run the numbers but TBH nor has this mob! And as soon as the input has reached the end of its useful life its not all bad as it can be replaced with a newer model. Answers on a postcard....

Now, I’m not clever or scientifically minded like you lot, but I’ve just had a bit of an idea that I thought I’d run past you. Instead of all this battery malarkey, we could fit a bike with a few bits of metal all bolted together - a couple of cylinders, some pipes, pistons; that kind of thing. Then we could get a type of oily liquid (we could call it... oh, I dunno, something like ‘petrol’?), make the petrol explode inside the cylinders, which would make the pistons go up and down and make the wheels turn.

 

Whaddaya think?

Can't see any long term problems that would cause health problems, death, migration, fascism, drought and war with that idea

Well there could be advantages - the British summer could get warmer and all those excess trees in California and Australia would get eliminated

I can see the appeal for ebikes however, for me I prefer my normal bike.

Correct me if im wrong but isn't the patents for amazing batteries that will last for stupid amount of time longer than the current owned by the oil companies?

You can blame the media for this. They often take a journal article talking about a new idea in battery tech and then run with it.

 

There's all sorts of new tech being developed but usually it takes decades for it to go from theory to the lab to commercial uses to mass market production.

 

So, while we only ever see incremental improvements in reality, those technologies are still being developed and will one day appear but by the time they do, they will just be another incremental improvement.

I agree - sometimes I bother to look up the original actual article or research and it is normally a concept of technology that has maybe worked in a lab and someone publishes a paper showing where they are up to - including possible real life lifetimes, recharge cycles etc

As it is a scientific paper it includes max and min projections

 

so some journalist takes the maximum and publishes it along with a widely optimistic description of where it is up to - sometimes (if they can be bothered) with an interview with some sort of tech expert. However the 'expert' will only be asked a nebulous question about 'how good would it be if a battery could be developed to do this' - so they answer the question they were asked

which the journalist they quotes as if it was a positive description based on detailed knowledge of the actual concept

 

 

Still - never mind - the Liverpool Echo has an article about whether people from Liverpool want to be called a Scouser or Liverpudlian - and whether they are proud of it or not - for the first time this week

 

so the future of responsible quality journalism is secure
