Dead PSU?

Morning

 

Yesterday I had my pc on, connected via remote access, went to put kids to bed, came back and couldn't connect, noticed pc was turned off, and it will not turn back on again.

 

When I opened the case the motherboard led was on, tried power button and the cpu fan looked like it wanted to spin but didn't.

 

I've removed everything - gpu, hard drives, replaced cmos battery and tried again - this time both the psu fan and cpu cooler fan maybe did 1 rotation then again nothing.

 

 

I've ordered another PSU as I think this maybe the issue but want to check here first just in case.

 

Its a rather old setup from 2012/13 (used as a htpc) so really could be any part has gone (ASUS M5A78L-M MB, AMD Phenom II X4 960T, Asus eah5450 gpu)

Edit - Did a corsair PSU test with a paper clip and PSU seems to be fine, looking at motherboard or CPU now

PSU could still easily be faulty particularly if the PSU is as old as the rest of it - some will power on with the paperclip unless they have any load. Try it again with a full sized hard drive plugged in, then again with a laptop drive/SSD plugged in (this will test 12v and 5v rail with a tiny load) - not guaranteed to give away the fault but possible. Certainly best to try with another PSU regardless - an 8 year old one will have it's fair share of crud inside and some components or even solder joints aren't designed to last that long (lead-free solder is nasty for this reason and electrolytic caps can be a strong candidate for failure particularly if the PSU is an off-brand)

I had something similar last year, replaced the PSU and it still happened. Turn out it was the motherboard! If possible test your mobo with another PSU or PSU with another mobo.

Its a corsair CX600.

 

I connected x2 3.5 sata drives to it and ran test again - start up fine.

 

may just get a new cpu, mb and ram

Any ideas for a HTPC matx motherboard, and AMD cpu - used really only for Kodi to watch movies, will have a Gigabyte GT 1030 OC 2GB OC GDDR5 graphics card

Do you need the graphics card? That Ryzen can handle most media with ease, only limited by connectivity.

By the looks of the graphics card, it's more limited in connectivity than the motherboard.

Agreed, the 1030 is pretty much their to give you more display outputs, i wouldnt be surpised if that intergrated GPU is better or atleast the same!
