Theldron Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 Hi all, I am turning our HP Proliant server into a backup server, so brought 2 x 6TB hard drives. I installed the drives but they are not being recognized by the array when I go into configuration. When I turn on the server the new drive LEDs light up then go off. The storage controller is a B120i, I have updated the firmware, BIOS etc. The drives I ordered where on the server hard drive compatibility list, but the drives I have received are not. Could this be the reason? Cheers
Norphy Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 HP storage controllers can be very fussy about the drives that they use. More often than not, if they don't have an HP firmware on them, they won't work.
computer_expert Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 Not sure if this applies to HP caddies but on Dell caddies there are multiple sets of screw holes. If you use the wrong set the drive doesn't connect to the backplane connectors. HP servers can be fussy though when it comes to non HP parts like Norphy mentioned.

runcmd Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 The B120i is a SATA Controller and the drive used should be a SATA drive which is a bit strange for a server. SAS drives will not be compatible with this controller.

Looks like you are stuck with 4TB drivesYeah not sure on this one but I brought a Dell server off eBay and the hard drives are something like 1TB max size or something like that. So yeah that's another point to look at maybe.
aicrd Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 The drives will work even if its not supported. I had a 5tb drive in my Dell R710 and it did work but it would only let me create partitions up to 2TB in size (The limit for my PERC card). Although with HP servers YMMV
mavhc Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 I had an old HBA that only did 2TB drives, so I just use it for SSDs now and bought another one, don't be limited by what the server came with 1
