Badaz52 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 Hi everyone, Just a quick query regarding your technical IT departments and what sort of staffing levels you have. We are a secondary school with 6th form and have: 1400 students, 150 staff 600-700 devices 14 virtual servers Our staffing is 1 FT NM and 1TT ICT Technician, suffice to stay at times we can be extremely stretched.
chris11256 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 We're a sixth form with 480 students, about 50 staff. 230 devices evenly split between desktops & laptops, around 25 virtual servers & two physical(ignoring ESX hosts). I have myself full time and an apprentice who initially does a 12 month level 3 course with the option to stay for a further 2 years and complete the level 4 qualification. Certain times of the year can be busy, but equally we can also be extremely quiet. I would apprechiate a second full time person rather than the apprentice, but thats not happenning anytime soon.
Rob_D Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 We're a secondary with 1500(ish) students and about 200 staff. We've got, around 650 Windows devices (desktops + 90ish laptops), about 150 apple devices (desktop iMacs + 50ish ipads), and about 50 servers (45 virtual - I know, we need to rationalize them) Plus all the other Phone/CCTV stuff. Staff wise, we'd normally* have: Network Manager Assistant Network Manager/Senior Technician x2 Regular techs (All full time) *We're in the middle of recruiting a new ANM.
Jcx500 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 1 IT Tech 200 End Users (Secondary ) About 300 Devices, Desktops , Laptops , tablets, Phones, Moblies 22 Virtual machines

Are you an academy?, we have just me FT (Strategic NM) and 1 TT ICT Technician(Junior) very similar size school to yours in terms of kit apart from the servers (that is a lot!) but I'm stretched a lot at certain times through the year and when the opportunity is there to "catch up" in the hols my tech isn't here. I used to have a Senior Technician but they took him off me and never replaced the role.

When I started the tech positions were part time (I think it was 3 days each, so a little over 1 FT between them), but then we had a series of reshuffles and wound up with both techs going full time.

Similar numbers, but we're in the middle of moving everything over to the cloud and have a primary too. We've got 1 x Network Manager 1 x G Suite Coordinator (me, I do all that side of things essentially) 2 x Technicians. One full time, one term time. Edited July 13, 2020 by paulkerton
sluggster66 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 480 pupil high school and 6 feeder primary schools. All together 1900 users 700 devices 53 VMs Only me.
ticktock Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 650 pupil high school 15 VMS 500 devices Just me. There used to be 2 of us but one position was chopped 3 years ago during redundancies. I think they are just realising that trying to wind IT down was a bit of a mistake!
localzuk Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 2 middle schools, 4 first schools, 4 pre-schools/nurseries across 8 sites. 1700 children 350 staff 600 Chromebooks 250 ipads ~700 Windows devices (though this is reducing due to the Chromebook rollout) ~30 VMs (this is dropping due to cloudification) Team of (all full time): 1 x NM (me) 1 x Senior Tech 1 x Technician I don't think we ever have "quiet" days any more, but it is totally manageable with that level of staffing due to spending several years unifying, modernising and updating everything.
