Jawloms Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 We have a 12 year old laser cutter which is obviously struggling by now. We have £5k to buy a new one. Has anyone got any experience with these things? I haven't, and I'm buying it! Any advice please?
3s-gtech Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 I have experience that a £5k laser cutter will be pretty awful. Think proprietary software interface, that can't read from any of your standard software, making using it a real pain. We've had a cutter in this price bracket for 13 years - it's well built and generally reliable (with servicing) but having to use EasyCut to have a chance of communicating with it (while using Windows in developer mode to turn off driver signing) has always been a big downside.
MkII Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 We also need to replace ours. The old one was a cheap Chinese thing that cost £3K a few years ago. Likewise awful software interface. Amusingly the LA have the exact same model in their Adult Services workshops.

One has just had the tube replaced. They were purchased when we got a new building back in 2007, i don't think the DT department actually have any idea how much they're worth from the way they get treated :/ Support from techsoft seems to be really good if that's any help though. 2

I have a soft spot for them anyway as their support is awesome and software just works - plus any company transparent enough to put prices like that in full public view deserves a listen. NotSoFast Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 We found it cheaper to have our old tube reconditioned than getting a new machine or a new tube. Hasn't seen much action as it was done just before lockdown, but when tested in March it was back to factory power. 1
