DalekSec Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 So lots of talking points from WWDC20! As an avid apple sheep user i'm interested to see where the ARM based macs go! I have a mid 2015 mbp 13" which i love but need to upgrade as it's not the fastest and only 128GB, but now thinking i'll hang on to it till it's no longer getting the latest OS as gives them time to iron out their ARM issues. Also i've already installed Big Sur and it looks very much like iOS/iPad Round up: https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/22/21299042/apple-wwdc-2020-recap-biggest-announcements-ios-ipados-macos-silicon-chips-mac
paulkerton Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 (edited) So lots of talking points from WWDC20! Was there though? Sure, there is the switch to "Apple Silicon" or ARM processors as everyone here should be calling them, but for most end-users that should be essentially unnoticed. Other than that was there anything of note? As an avid apple sheep user i'm interested to see where the ARM based macs go! See, that's the thing of note as far as I can see. People might now be holding off to buy ARM machines that'll be supported longer and not bothering with any upcoming Intel based Macs. Be interesting to see if that's the case experience (which it was with PowerPC > Intel) Edited June 23, 2020 by paulkerton
FishCustard Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 The ability to have the best of both worlds with a Mac - running macOS and Windows on the same device - was the main attraction for me. If they stop doing that, I'll probably stop buying them. Get a regular PC and dual-boot Windows and Linux (sometimes you just need a *NIX OS...). I highly doubt there are many like me who would make such a choice, but there will be a few.
DalekSec Posted June 23, 2020 Author Posted June 23, 2020 Was there though? Depends how talkative you are The more integration with iOS the better for me, i love simple things atm like being able to open up apps instantly from where i left off on my phone. So hopefully with the change to ARM and the ability to use iOS apps on the Mac will make it even sleeker. Also the AirPods moving between devices instantly is a god send, the amount of fiddling i have to do sometimes to move mine around is annoying. tvOS popping up with camera feeds when it detects moving etc. is really cool, i don't have any cameras as don't have my own place but will be looking into it when i do!

FishCustard Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Apple clearly stated that they will still be shipping Intel based Macs for some time to come.... Ah excellent. Not that I should really be buying Macs, as many of my colleagues tell me - I should buy a "proper computer"
paulkerton Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Apple clearly stated that they will still be shipping Intel based Macs for some time to come.... They said they expect a 2 year transition and they'd be supporting Intel based Macs for some time to come. If you were around for the PowerPC transition, they said 18 months (June 2006 - December 2007) and they took 8 (January 2006 - August 2006) They then released Snow Leopard 10.6 in 2009, and Leopard 10.5 was the version of OS X all PowerPC users were sat on till 2011. This was all in the time when OS updates were paid for, by the way. It was only Mavericks in 2013 when Apple went free with their OS updates. 1

So hopefully with the change to ARM and the ability to use iOS apps on the Mac will make it even sleeker. A lot of iOS apps would be a pain to use though if the Mac itself didn't have touch screen. Anyone want to hazard a guess if they will add one to the Mac? Or will there be some annoyed people buying the Macs and then finding out it's not got a touch screen.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 The reason Apple never added a touchscreen to Mac was primarily because you had the iPad for that and they wanted you to have both devices. However, with the lines becoming increasingly blurry and the hardware now essentially being the same I wouldn't be surprised if they added a touchscreen to the macbook pro as a premium feature in the next year or two.
hardtailstar Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 Seeing lots of reviews suggesting that the changes to IOS are very much like Android or just catching up with the features already on Android. Ive not looked and doubt I will as im an Apple user.
psydii Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 Education update: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2020/10658/ Shared iPad is getting a temporary profile enabled by default. I wonder whether we'll see Windows on Arm in Apple Virtualisation? Probably not - WinARM lacks much that made bootcamp desirable. Brining the iOS frameworks to macos is probably the biggest thing for end users. The updates to iPadOS and macOS GUIs really hints at touch-macs becoming a thing real soon now. The other big thing is the Foundation trailer. Hope they do the story justice, while re-working/updating it (With PoC, women and non-anachronistic future tech) to make it good TV.
