Ditto Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 My eldest is starting on his first PC build. Having always had brand OEM windows licenses, I completely forgot about OS licencing. Linux is a possibility in the future, but for now for a number of reasons, Win 10 is required. So, the question is what is the best, safe, legitimate way to get a Win 10 pro retail license at the lowest cost. For example, I've upgraded many OEM Win 7 licenses to Win 10, even very recently. Does that work for the retail license?
mavhc Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Buy an OEM key https://www.cdkeysdeals.com/microsoft-windows-10-professional-oem-edition-key 1

Ditto Posted June 11, 2020 Author Posted June 11, 2020 Buy an OEM key https://www.cdkeysdeals.com/microsoft-windows-10-professional-oem-edition-key CDKeys has always had me in a quandary. My instinct of 'too good to be true' kicks in, yet the TrustPilot reviews are strong. I guess the question is how do they sell a legitimate license so inexpensively. Not that it really matter at the price, if I recall correctly, this being OEM is tied to the hardware, whereas 'Retail' is transferable?
Achandler Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 An EU court ruled about licenses being transferable, even OEM ones, though that seems to be why Microsoft have now gone down the embedded keys to stop in (in my opinion). It came about where Microsoft were basically saying if you buy a new motherboard or processor you need a new license (retail or OEM). They got challenged and lost. Basically old PCs can have there OEM licenses resold off them, so people who mass buy or collect scrap computers, sell them on before the computers are melted down etc. There are also unused OEM licenses sold, where you often get sent a screw or some other piece of hardware to fulfil the T and Cs. 1

Thanks. I had heard about the court challenge but hadn't realised it had led to this conclusion. So for about £6 I can get the retail version - https://www.cdkeysdeals.com/microsoft-windows-10-professional-oem-key. And for another £8 retail version of Office 2019 https://www.cdkeysdeals.com/microsoft-office-2019-professional-plus-windows-key Are there any challenges getting hold of the correct ISO images? On MS, it looks as though you'd have to have a MS account?
LeMarchand Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Won't the iso from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 work? If not IANAL, but as long as you're using your personal key, W10Pro is on VLSC.

Its for personal stuff and activates i dont really care about the details. ive bought a few from the various "Trusted" and i use that term loosely.... websites. and the ISO can be got using the media creation tool since windows will switch version to whatever key is entered
admars Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 or join the insider program and download it? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso works for me 1

VLSC is not an option right now for me.

I also believe he might be able to donwload Office legitimately because of 'Student' account with his school, but I'd need to check (is it web only or desktop?). Either way, I've not been involved with a school that's promote this (or for staff) which I feel is a shame.

VLSC is not an option right now for me. W10 sorted; just update it up as far as it will let you (1909 or possibly 2004). Is your son a student? Probably entitled to cheapish Office through his place of learning, though probably only 365. I get where you are coming from, but as a 'role model' for my son, I'm trying to remain on the legitimate side of things - and he's a stickler for the rule of law! If you're worried about certain sources, could you find an "unopened" W7 or later box on eBay and then go to W10 from there?
mavhc Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Options are a) buy a cheap key, or b) look at the retail price and install linux
fiendishlyclever Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 PC Pro has a store too for retail users - is £40 a good price? https://store.pcpro.co.uk/p36876-windows_10_professional

Achandler Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 The right to upgrade was removed, but it would still work. If the equipment was old then you could claim you upgraded, didn't like Windows 10 so downgraded back to Windows 7 and now have upgraded again but the hardware is brand new. The keys you can buy for £8 etc are a legal way to get a license. Microsoft don't like it but they ignore it now. Their business model has moved on from the OS, they are about using an OS to get you to buy their online services, Office 365 etc. This makes you a constant source of income, and if you also pay them through buying a new PC then that's a bonus to them. 1
mavhc Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 And spam you with adverts unless you pay yearly to rent Windows 10 Enterprise 1
