KarlGoddard Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 http://www.ictforum.info/AllEditorials.asp?eId=86 My favourite bit...... 4th paragraph, the bit in bold.
alan-d Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Idiots like this are far too numerous to be worthy of my time. I was tempted to reply something on the lines of; We don't tell you what we are doing because it would be quicker to teach a monkey to retype the works of Shakespear, and if by some fluke of nature you did understand what we were doing - you would only assume that you are a technician the next time it goes wrong and completely cock it up. Afterwhich you would spend 3 days making up an excuse as to how the usb stick got jammed in the monitor port and the keyboard plugged into the ceiling mounted projector. Nah - won't bother replying
webman Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Tell a teacher what you're doing and the usual reply is "Oh too complicated for me" or "I just use the damn thing". Who is this Dave May anyway?
pshuttle Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 An incredibly irritating article from somebody with no awareness of the job. Pete
TechMonkey Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 "even though they may be thinking 'I have no idea how to do that' or 'I haven't got the time'." No we are normally thinking, I'll file that away for EduGeeks later either under FFS!! or look what I have to deal with. I'll then pull it out at the Xmas party for a good laugh! He does have a few good ideas but I think most people do them anyway. Though saying we do one job only at a time I think must be inpossible in most schools!!! I do like the way you can get his article titles to dance though if you put the pointer in teh right place. Looking around it looks like a PGCE student with some time on their hands. & own up, who is ICTTech?
russdev Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 email sent to them Hello I am very concerned about article on your site http://www.ictforum.info/AllEditorials.asp?eId=86 and some basic lack of understanding I was wondering if I was to write a follow article addressing some of the issues that you have raised that you would be willing to post it on your site. From Russell Dyas
webman Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 It is for this reason I don't visit the TES forums, I just get wound up about the drivel that a lot of teachers post on there. Plus the fact there isn't a dedicated IT Support section on there, I'm protesting against it by not using the site altogether. (I did email them asking if it could be arranged but got told 'no') When you have spent 4 years gaining a degree in Computer Science, spent years working in the IT industry and after owning and using a computer since the age of four years old THEN you are pretty confident to say when asked if you can do something - YES. There is probably nothing that cannot be worked out with time and inclination. Most teaching staff are inept with a computer and need proper training on how to use one. There is absolutely no way a technician is going to sit down with a teacher and discuss the intracacies of the job due to both time constraints and often the total lack of the capacity of the teacher to understand anything complex in IT. Technicians do not tell teachers how to do their job so please lets leave it at that. When you have worked as an IT Tech for shockingly low wages in an understaffed and poorly financed department, then you can grumble. ICTTech An excellent reply. Wasn't one of us was it? Plus I wish this 'Dave' bloke would learn how to use BBCode properly This is where ICT Coordinators, Network Managers and School Leaders can talk to ICT Service Providers and solution makers. It shows the site has very little regard to technical support personnel, too.
Netman Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 A quick Whois on the site shows the registrant's email as bicycledoctor@... Obviously well qualified in IT then...!!!
broc Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 When I first started my job as a trainee systems programmer on IBM mainframes way back in the early 70s, one of the very first things my boss told me was this: Knowledge is power; we practice 'black magic' in this department... nobody knows what we do, or how we do it. Most people don't care, but they worry when we are not around........ I still engage in black magic..... on school networks
GrumbleDook Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I have posted a polite message basically saying "nice thoughts ... yes .. best practice is something we would all like to aim for, but remember that we know what we are doing ... and sometimes are job is made worse by teachers. Try not to start these articles being so negative please!" Then again, I have a habit of winding people up when I join a new forum ... That reminds me ... must post a link to this on icttechnician.com ... some of those lot make us look like we love teachers (admittedly I do ... but I am married to one!)
GrumbleDook Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 As with all forums ... there are one or two members that are set against the enemy ... and they are often the first to post a reply ... and continue posting on it too ... But it is fairly balanced in most areas ... but teacher appreciation is sometimes not one of them. Then again, for real vehemence against teachers ... the TES forums are the best :-) but over there are certain regulars who *really* like to hate anyone and everyone!
barryfl Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 AHHHHH I am fed up with this type of Wanaa-Bee Techie Teacher. In the wise words of a Pizza Hut advert: ‘We will do the technical stuff, You do the gawping’ Given a new job to do, the ICT technician always likes to say 'yes'. They know that we get disappointed if they say 'no', even though they may be thinking 'I have no idea how to do that' or 'I haven't got the time' No. We think if we say outright no, we are being unhelpful and not doing our job, Or at least thats what our network managers and SMT say when they have a complaint whereby an ICT techie has said no straight away to a request from a member of staff before. Theres no winning. Reading back there have been many classic comments made and im sure more will follow Regards, Barry Leonard
