Loaning of equipment to families

I've been asked once again whether we would consider lending Chromebooks to some of our Pupil Premium families (those not eligible under the current DFE scheme).

 

Has anyone done this? Any thoughts around insurance and a written agreement for families to sign before borrowing?

We have done this. Insurance arrangements, and signing of agreements is not something I have been involved with.

 

So far I have prepared something in excess of 20 of our laptops for use away from our site, and off or domain (more to follow, possibly)

We have done this too. Total of around 50 Chromebooks so far. School is taking the risk and no insurance requirements have been asked of families.

We've loaned a couple out to pupils this week. Again, no insurance, but we've made them sign typical Ts&Cs (it's still ours, you may be held liable for damage, etc)

Make sure you separtly account for the power supply - make it a separate item to be ticked off on return (possibly even two items - power brick and kettle / cloverleaf lead). I don't think we've had a single iPad power supply returned from any iPads we've lent out - we sometimes get the USB cable, but the power supply itself seems to always get forgotten.

Yeah we've done this, made them sign a form etc

Someone should have asked what are you going to do if they are not returned

 

Maybe you will do nothing or send a series of maybe 3 letters of increasing severity - but it needs to be said at the start

I went through this with books and the library - cleared things up because it was decided that a book in thekid's house was a loss that was worth it

 

but books are a lot cheaper than a computer

We had a written agreement which we knew wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

Welsh Government have made money available to replace any damaged laptops as long as we have evidence of serial numbers with signatures.

We've signed out around 60 Chromebooks to staff and students. No insurance and a simple sign out sheet. A lot of trust and good will, hope it's not misplaced. I did photograph every device from all sides so damage can't be denied.

Are you working onsite to set up loan devices or remotely? I am been asked to do this for over 100 devices. This means I will be have to be on site for a very long time.

 

Will appreciate your input on how you manage it.

Back on topic: I am on site again preparing another set of laptops. I have been told to expect these to be the last, but they won't be.

We distributed around 50 chromebooks before the school closed.

 

Basic taking equipment offsite form was completed - we didn't bother with insurance as the excess will probably be worth more than the device.

Manager is off site, and hasn't been here for quite some time.

We've had this once or twice, not from our managers but admin type staff with no real gravitas, both teams responded with we are following the strict government guidelines, we won't be putting ourself, our family, the general public at risk, if you have an issue please contact x

We’ve loaned out about 8 laptops so far and had requests for more!

 

Since we have some teaching staff on site for supporting key workers, they have plugged laptops in for us and we have remoted in and removed them from the domain etc.

 

Technician went in on Wednesday to grab 20 laptops from science and turned them on in our office and left straight away to removed form domain etc. Remotely.

 

I went in yesterday, checked them and bagged them up ready for loaning out.

 

I oversee loan approval via SLT and then if laptop is needed, we contact site manager who collects laptop bag labelled with number and leaves in main office where technician generates paperwork and emails to staff on site who print and get paperwork signed when laptop collected.

 

No insurance check etc just good will etc.

 

So far system seem to work well.

I was ordered in by SLT. Locked myself in a room (as in my opinion social distancing is not being observed in school) and re-imaged our entire laptop stock. Don't think for one minute that we will get much of it back.
