What home router?

Hi,

 

What counts as a decent home router today?

 

My preference would be no WiFi as I have a couple of Unifi AP's about the place but also something verging on slightly pro features and much better than your standard home router.

Avoid the unifi USG routers. They are awful. If there are features you want but are not yet supported, you are in for a long wait for them to be implemented (if Ubiquiti can be bothered - a good example is if you need to disable nat, you need to edit json files for it to stay permanent as you can't do it via the UI despite feature requests being open for years).

 

Have a look at something like pfsense/untangle/sophos xg home if you have an old desktop/server hanging around and don't mind running it 24/7.

I've got my VM in modem only mode into a pfSense box and then a Unifi AP. Does me, although want to replace the hardware as its on an old server and could do with something smaller.

I'd also be using the ISP supplied unit in modem mode

Get something that can run DD-WRT or OpenWRT, then stick the crappy ISP modem/router/AP into modem-only mode.

When I was on Virgin I always used Modem only mode and connected a Virtual firewall direct to the VM box.

 

Now I am on VDSL I use a DrayTek direct on the VDSL connection and have done so for the last 2 years without any issue apart from an external cable fault a few months back. As I have multiple public IPs these are passed thru to the same virtual firewall which handles all the NAT etc. I cannot fault DrayTek as a router, I was a field engineer in my first IT role and we had easily 500+ DrayTek 2600s and 2800s at customer sites I replaced like 3 of them in 4 years.

 

 

Used Unifi WiFi for a few years now and before that I had LinkSys APs so not used the WiFi on the ISPs supplied units for about 8 years now.

Ive got a Draytek 2860n and its been great!! Dont use the WLAN on it though as my WLAN uses an old ruckus 7363 stuck the middle of the house.

 

Before the Draytek 2860, was using the 2830 without any issues, only reason i upgraded was due to getting FTTC.

 

I've even used the USB ports with a sim card dongle and it worked great for when a group of us went way for a weekend - highly recommend the 2860 if you can get one on ebay.

 

I"ve used netgears / d-links / linksys (with the dd-wrt) in the past and nothing comes close to the draytek though the dd-wrt software is a great freebie.

 

Me personaly have never used the router that the ISP have sent out apart from when ive spoken to them about issues with the line.

Still got my draytek 2820 in tobacco yellow from the fag smoking office it was in! Draytek even release firmware updates for it occasionally. Not bad for an end of life product from 2011.

Draytek seem to be excellent. I don't have one at home but we had issues with our SIP VDSL connection at school where most nights the router would drop out and not re-sync so had to reboot it in the morning when getting into work.

Following BT visits to site, cable replacement, they said it was a REIN issue.

Unable to find any particular source causing the problem, the router was replaced for a DRAYTEK and we've not had a single drop in the connection since it was installed.

Mikrotik for me. Can’t remember what model I have to be extant but it does everything I need and more. Can dial VPN from special IP addresses to VLans (guest wireless that can’t access all my smart features) to VPN server.

 

Paired with a unifi AP upstairs that gives me a quick, stable and fast network

 

(Apart from my flakey toughswitch!)
