3s-gtech Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Hopefully to spin-off from the Lockdown thread. The current challenge is press-ups! If you can’t do any, start from there! Form is key. Keep your body straight, bum down but not sagging at the hips. All the way down until your chin/chest or belly touches the floor, then back up. See how many you can do in a minute! Records need videos if you’re brave enough for the critique!
3s-gtech Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 As some hate press/push ups, it’s only fair that you can add your own 1 minute achievements in other exercises too (or timed things like planks). Burpees Burpee with press-up (I won’t call them their real name here) Squat jumps to parallel Sit ups (but technique is everything) Plus any others you fancy!
witch Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 High plank to low plank for 1 minute Supine plank (yuck) Side plank Star jumps for I minute Jumping jacks Squat jacks Skips Forward lunge(jumping lunges if you are really fit!) Reverse lunge Bicycle crunch Straight leg crunch Do be careful though - speed isnt everything. Form is more important. We can all do loads in a minute if you dont finish the move properly
3s-gtech Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 Runs too! That was me tonight. Nice easy pace 5k (pretty much exact distance) with 400ft of climbing - 27.30. Waits for someone to post their 16 minute parkrun! Too beautiful an evening to be stuck in I think.
unixman_again Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Push ups. I used to go for numbers. I started off with as many as I could do (about 15 I think). Every day you do one more. I got up to 80 before I stopped - It was all taking too long and my form was terrible towards the end. I don't do push ups very often, and when I do I stick to 10 to 12 per set. The gym and dance classes are closed, and I'm stuck at home like everybody else. A couple of good things though - I can spend all day in my PJs, only getting dressed when I wander out to the shed at 16:30 to lift the weights. My aerobic fitness will be reduced, but not my strength. I'm so glad I made a pullup bar some years ago. I'm trying to work out how to make it a bit higher. With the straps on ready for dips, hip flexor, etc. With the safety post in, ready to ride the Brommie when it is heaving down with rain 1
mikeprice Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 How about a cycling thingy I did a "ride 500 miles in July" thing last year how about doing a 'Edugeekers ride 500 miles in April" thing bonus points for 1000 miles all bikes allowed - including ebikes (otherwise I can't do it!!!) - point of honor to keep the assist level as low as you can manage anyone have a good site to log rides using gps Endomondo can do it but I can't see a way of making it private
witch Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 @unixman_again If you do supersets, changing from muscle group to muscle group without the usual gap between sets - it will be a cardio exercise too and will keep up your aerobic fitness
mikeprice Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 @unixman_again If you do supersets, changing from muscle group to muscle group without the usual gap between sets - it will be a cardio exercise too and will keep up your aerobic fitness I have NO clue what that means as an aside I have discovered that love to ride are offering a prize draw entry for ever ride entered this week (only noticed it yesterday) and you can map the ride via the mains apps and just attach the 2 and log it so I have done that for 2 days now
CHiLL Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) I've been following The Body Trainer's PE stuff on YouTube this week. I do find him a little annoying, but maybe that's the norther in me. I'm not doing it live because sod doing exercise at 9am, but doing it later in the day. I'm very unfit at the best of times and now I'm even more sedentary whilst not in work. Since my gym is closed, I thought I'd give it a go. It is geared more towards keeping the kids fit while they're at home but it suites me fine due to my lack of fitness. I cast the video from my phone to my TV and do it in my living room. Sadly I only have roller blinds on the window, so pull them down, otherwise I'm on full show to everyone! Not something people want to see, trust me! You don't need that much floor space, I'm doing it all within the confines of my 2x1.5m rug. It's a 5 minute warm up, followed by 10x 30 second exercise/30 second rest. Then a 2 minute rest. Then another 10x 30 second exercise/30 second rest. Generally the exercise revolves around cardio and some muscle work. Cardio involves things such as jumping/hopping around, star jumps, running on the spot and variations on basic things. The muscle work involves squats, lunges, crunches, slow burpees, planks and variations on those. I missed Monday and Tuesday's ones because I forgot about them, so I'm trying to catch up. I did one yesterday and two back to back today. That was a mistake. I'm not so much walking but hobbling around the house because my legs hurt. I'm determined to carry on with it though. I don't feel much of a cardio challenge. I used to like to run on the treadmill; running outside meant having to look where you are going, whereas the treadmill is brain out and go. My knees don't really like running much these days. Skipping is what I do now. Ballet class is a very cardio intensive, once you get past the barre. Bike riding is good too. I don't like exercise bikes (I have been known to fall asleep) but I like riding outside on the towpath (plenty of canals in the Black Country) or the rollers are good if it is raining.
3s-gtech Posted March 27, 2020 Author Posted March 27, 2020 (edited) Just re-did my 5k route from Wednesday (we’ll count that as my lunch break, as I’m working from home). Identical route, I knocked it down to 25.04 from 27.30 - no wonder I’m blowing now! My time on a flat course is 22.00 so shows the effect of the inclines! Edited March 27, 2020 by 3s-gtech

Strange - if I lift heavily enough and move with as good a form as I can, after a few sets I am breathing more heavily and beginning to sweat, and my heart rate goes up inot the cardio fitness range
3s-gtech Posted March 31, 2020 Author Posted March 31, 2020 I fitted military press ups into my weekly circuit that I share with my athletics club. I managed 22 in 30 seconds, after that it was ropey as anything! They’re very tough - I could maybe do 30-35 in a minute but I’d be cooked. The circuit was press-ups, crossover sit ups, burpees, side lunges, tricep dips then squat thrusts - all 30s with 10s rest. Three sets, then two, then one to finish. Today will be improv gym day - already added a couple of old car wheels to my borrowed barbell!
superatticman Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Any takers for press ups??? How about sit ups I got to 50 using the standard technique.....
3s-gtech Posted April 3, 2020 Author Posted April 3, 2020 Any takers for press ups??? How about sit ups I got to 50 using the standard technique..... Pop it in the exercise thread! I’ve not been doing these as once I’ve done work then a regular training session I’m cooked, but may try one of them tomorrow.
stevejp Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Any takers for press ups??? How about sit ups I got to 50 using the standard technique..... The going down bit I can cope with - no problem. May need some help with sitting up part of it, though...

elsiegee40 Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 (edited) I have decided to widen the scope of this thread to exercise generally during lockdown. It’s a challenge to do it! Daughter and I have started doing yoga using the Down Dog app. It’s all free until the end of the month. It is app based, but realistically even an ipad screen is too small. It does provide a web browser URL and we use that on a laptop plugged into the tv. Edited April 3, 2020 by elsiegee40
Djmonky1 Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 I'm using an app called get fit in 30 days But also trying to get out and walking as well or maybe cycling as well
3s-gtech Posted April 3, 2020 Author Posted April 3, 2020 I’ve found that an old backpack, a length of rope and a wheel makes a great substitute for a resistance sledge, dragged along behind me. I’ll try the press up challenge tomorrow - 60 seconds, as many as I can muster! Aside from that, let us know how your 5k and longer times are working out, if you can get out that far.

Chin slightly up makes a hell of a difference. I struggled to get to 22 following this approach. However doing it this way does maximise the effectiveness of the workout. Can really feel it targeting my chest as opposed to triceps. Hope to be able to get to 30 in a few weeks.
CHiLL Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 I have done more of the Joe Wicks thing this week and I think it's been good. I've found it really tough, my chest is a bit tight though. I can do the cardio stuff, but the things that require muscle work, like press ups, planks, burpees, squats, lunges, etc...I'm really struggling with. So the more I do it, the better I'll get hopefully. I've also dug out my dumbbells, so I'm thinking over the weekend period of rest (as he doesn't do it over the weekend), I might use them to exercise my arms and shoulders. Since most of his exercises are cario and leg based, this should hopefully help when it comes to doing press ups during the exercuses.
mikeprice Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 SO far I have been managing about 14-20 miles a day on my bike - OK ebike but in low assistance mode gotta be better than nothing - and the peace and quiet is wonderful I often got to Liverpool airport - I go to the end of the runway which is normally a good place to see the planes take off and land lots of thing flying at the moment - 2 kestrels yesterday and a buzzard the day before than just pigeons today went a bit further yesterday and got to the main passenger terminal - it was like a scene from a disaster movie - the sort of thing Hollywood does and we think it is a bit OTT saw 2 people - 1 in a van from a security company and a workman who looked at me as if I was weird (how did he know???) roads are nice and quiet - which is nice
