SharePoint Migration Tool

Any hints and tips on using SharePoint Migration Tool, in relation to (speeding up) transferring data (from USB storage device) to OneDrive? As the performance is much slower than anticpaited. Especially as expected the SMT process (on lease line) to be quicker than 'drag-n-drop' (on home broadband).

 

I have read articles about doing it in small batches, and how the uploading of many small files take even longer etc.

 

For example, nearly 24 hours on and only 33% complete (52GB/220GB of data)

I would say that's particularly slow. I transferred all of our file server shared drives over to sharepoint online using this tool last year, did it during school holiday so got faster transfer speeds. Transferred over 1TB during a week no problem. It creates a cache of files on the machine you're using the migration tool on, so you may need to do it in batches.

I have found the SharePoint Migration Tool to be pretty naff and unreliable.

 

We use the 'Open with Explorer' functionality using Internet Explorer (yes, I know) so that we can drag/drop files directly using File Explorer and that has worked well for Terabytes of data transfers.

I bought this Office 365 SharePoint Online File Migration Tool for 30 days to move user files from storage server to OneDrive, was impressed with the transfer speeds, we had a 200mb line at the time (1gb now) and we only throttled by the MS transfer limits.

 

My next task is move a 1.4tb shared drive to SharePoint

Looks like a good tool but we've done it all now.

Our poor experience with 'SharePoint Migration Tool' continues, 4 days in and only 135GB (of 222Gb migrated)..

 

Plus failed on a couple of attempts transferring from smaller capacity USB pen drives.

 

This is going to be a very, very long process.. especially as we want staff to use OneDrive - may have to look at (purchasing) alternative solution(?).

If you have serious amounts of data, you can ship it to MS on encrypted usb drives

I've moved terabytes with the MS tool. It's worked pretty well for us, saturating our 500/500Mbit line. Is there any way to migrate the files into a specific path rather than the General sharepoint library?

Nvermind, managed to load up good old Internet Explorer and map a drive to windows explorer.
