What to expect Flying debris could lead to Injuries or danger to life Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs expected Longer journey times and cancellations, as road, rail, air and ferry services affected Some roads and bridges closed Power cuts with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage Injuries and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

OK, apart from nearly colliding with the bough of a tree that hadn't been cleared away properly. No harm done, but I didn't see it until almost too late: Its remnants were left protruding into the road on both sides.
mikeprice Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 went down to the tip today to get rid of a load of timber left over from ripping out a built in wardrobe thing (OK - I didn;t - got someone in who knows what he is doing - sort of relative actually - for a gas heating person he is damn good at plastering!) anyway - some idiot was trying to get a door into the skip against the wind (might have been me - you'd think I would know better after many years sailing dinghies!)

Now I have the fun job of calling around fencing companies who are inundated with calls and they can make up their own pricing in the circumstances. It looks like it'll be several weeks until someone is available to actually do the repair works. Annoyingly I live in a corner property and it's the boundary fence that's gone, meaning you can just wander from the road into my garden. Even more annoyingly, because the land is shared between myself and the maisonette above me...I have conflicting information about sharing costs. One document I got with the property states that all boundary lines are shared and the deeds specifically outline my area. The damaged fence is 80% in my section according to that, therefore 80% my responsibility. Edited February 10, 2020 by CHiLL

The man was seen struggling off the coast of Hastings, East Sussex, at about 11:00 GMT, prompting a search involving the Coastguard helicopter. He was found alive by the Coastguard about six miles away in Rye Bay shortly before 13:30. Saffron Peterson, who phoned emergency services, said he lost his board and was being "sucked under the swell". A video shared on social media appeared to show a man wearing a wetsuit paddling through waves. HM Coastguard said: "The surfer was seen to lose his surf board by a Coastguard team who were out on patrol this afternoon. "The Coastguard helicopter, Hastings RNLI Lifeboat, Bexhill Coastguard Rescue Team and Ryde Bay Coastguard Rescue Team carried out the search for him." Earlier, the RNLI had advised people to "stay clear of exposed areas and breaking waves" during the storm.
mikeprice Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 People don;t appreciate the power of water - a river doesn't need to flow all that fast to knock you off you feet and that surfer was amazingly lucky - spotting someone in the water, especially in rough sea, is almost impossible. I sailed in dinghies for many year - rules number 1 was always stay with the boat no matter what - a boat can be seen - once you are swimming you are just a head in the water - mostly below the waves tops N.B. if the boat actually sinks you can let go of the boat at that point still - there is always some nutter that thinks it is OK for the lifeboat crew to put themselves at risk just so they get to do what they want 2

A huge poplar tree in the park next to our school came crashing down during morning break. Thankfully, it fell away from the school/street/houses and no-one was walking past it at the time (I hope!). 1

I can hear my TV aerial getting blown around via the chimny mount. It's being shown as a bit less wind speed, but it's constant instead of gusty. Not nice out.

Just seen this on the news - no winter weather gear and some of them wearing trainers on the highest mountain in the UK in the middle of country wide weather warnings I totally support the fact that Mountain Rescue and the RNLI ALWAYS go out and rescue people - however stupid they appear to be but sometimes you do wonder 2
