Access control systems. Printer servers. Papercut. SCCM. SCVMM. Smoothwall. Password manager. SMTP relay. RADIUS. Power management. Phone system components. Safeguarding stuff like NetSupport DNA. Various parts of our remote desktop system and much more besides.

Several of them are connected with the releasing, or otherwise, of various kinds of hound.

 

Also, global offices needing various things, bespoke app servers, highly redundant ‘scale out’ services...

Smoothwall runs on Windows?

 

Not sure why they all need their own Windows Server though, guess it's because they're free because you already paid £££ for Datacenter.

 

Per site I have 1 Windows VM as a DC/FS/PS/WDS, and per school maybe 1 SIMS server that'll be going soon hopefully. Also for some reason NET2 door system is Windows based, it ended up on a Win10 VM because the installers wanted access so it's not on the domain. Rest are linux VMs, zabbix, freepbx, vyos, pfsense, flatcar, wordpress, etc

So out of curiosity what kind of cost does VMware run a school, I can see general pricing but do they offer edu discounts?

We bought VMWare Essentials Plus (3 hosts, 2 CPU per host) a few years ago. Was about £2900. Then we pay about £850 a year support/maintenance.

You see, VMware Essentials just annoys me. It’s gimped almost to the point of uselessness. No Storage vMotion. No DRS. It will only manage one cluster if you want more than one cluster, you need as many vSphere instances as you have clusters. But if you want to go up to Standard to get said useful features, it’s extortionate.

 

It was this kind of nickel and diming from VMware that drove me away from it the first place

Every infrastructure is different..could be the total number of servers across a trust...i know ours in increasing and it's all about role separation and redundancy...might have systems you don't have and why put all eggs in one basket!
