New petrol bikes that are Euro 6 compliant are actually just as efficient as cars fyi.

My son has a yamaha tricity 125, gets 140mpg out of it, it has a cat fitted and fuel injection, 4 stroke. It even cuts the engine fuel off when you throttle off.

 

The prob with electric bikes is the range and power for cost at the moment. It will all change in time of course, but there's nothing available to match 125cc power to weight and purchase price for the time being.

 

There are better electric scooters just coming onto the market now with 50cc equivalent power and not too bad pricing but still £1000 or more than petrol models.

For sure old 2 stroke bikes are polluting and not that economic but people will continue to use them for a long time yet, especially in 3rd world countries.

 

The most viable price wise is probably NIU at the moment who do a 50cc equivalent (25mph) for £1400, it only has a 20 mile range though...it's easy to see why given that 16yr olds move onto a car or 125 at 17 years old they won't throw much money at it. Theres plenty of old used mopeds around for a few hundred quid, even brand new chinese ones for less than a grand and they only want the things for a year. If you're an adult commuter then you'd be looking at 125cc straight off if not a car ofc.

 

Electric cars can pack a lot more battery storage in for better range per kg. I'm hoping that new capacitor tech will come along to sort the issue.

We're at the Tesla Model S stage. To get cheaper vehicles, more people need to buy the expensive ones and the price will come down as manufacturing costs will drop and technology will improve.

 

You don't need as much range if you invest in a good charging system. You need to invest in a good charging system to give people confidence to buy them. If EV-Bikes only has 15kwh then 250kwh chargers could top up as fast as a petrol stop.

Virgin Hyperloop has trialled its first ever journey with passengers, in the desert of Nevada.

 

The futuristic transport concept involves pods inside vacuum tubes carrying passengers at high speeds.

 

In the trial, two passengers - both company staff - travelled the length of a 500m test track in 15 seconds, reaching 107mph (172km/h).

 

However, this is a fraction of Virgin's ambitions for travel speeds of more than 1,000km/h.

 

Virgin Hyperloop is not the only firm developing the concept but nobody has carried passengers before.

 

Sara Luchian, director of customer experience, was one of the two on board and described the experience as "exhilarating both psychologically and physically" to the BBC shortly after the event.

 

She and chief technology officer Josh Giegel wore simple fleeces and jeans rather than flights suits for the event, which took place on Sunday afternoon outside of Las Vegas. Ms Luchian said the journey was smooth and "not at all like a rollercoaster" although the acceleration was "zippier" than it would be with a longer track. Neither of them felt sick, she added.

 

She said that their speed was hampered by the length of the track and acceleration required...

I don't think they have any choice about electric scooters - there are too many of the things around and if you increase bike lanes then people will start using scooters in them

 

It is just a case of how the legalise them and what restriction they impose

and the longer they leave it the more will be sold that are not road legal

 

so they should get a damn move on!!!

5 mph is really to slow for a 2wheel machine to be stable - actually will increase problems due to people being unable to keep a straight course

 

current motor cutoff speed for an ebike is 15.5 mph - and a statement from some ( either a senior Police officer , or dept. of transport or some such thing) gave a guidance that bicycles on a shared path should not exceed 18 mpg

 

if the path has any reasonable number of pedestrians on it these are too fast - especially the 18 mph - but work fine if there are only cyclists and everyone behaves sensibly

then everyone has to behave sensibly and slow down as the number of walkers increases

 

and, of course, people need to treat more vulnerable users as having absolute priority

hence is a walker suddenly veers right when you are passing him on your ebike and you collide with them - then I would start with an assumption that the cyclist hadn't slowed down enough

 

you might notice a major problem with the above ideas

specifically it requires everyone to act reasonably

MOST people will act reasonably - but rules need to be in place so the idiots can be blamed

 

 

I have actually come across people on cycling forums saying that a person walking nearly knocked them off their bike on a shared path when they turned suddenly and the cyclist could only just avoid them - while doing the "allowed" 18 mph - FAR too fast to be passing that close to a walker

and anyway - we will stop breaking the law when all car drivers stop driving and using phones, exceeding the speed limit and not looking properly and pulling out in front of other road users

 

which - as we know ALL car drivers do - just like all cyclist ride through red lights

 

and all IT technicians etc etc etc

how qualified they are (cough teachers cough)
