My fellow dyslexics,

I'm having a real struggle recently with learning, i can learn fine from videos but not from walls of text (Looking at you Microsoft.....)

My manager has set me the task of passing a Microsft exam, he recommended this one: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/modules/what-is-m365/2-whats-in-m365 . I managed to do the first section but it too me about an hour to do it. As at first i read it and had no luck with remembering it so had to find a reader and write it down but i stuggle with this also, i find my brain works a lot faster than the readers read and than i can write.

I've tried tons of things to get over the wall of text but no luck, when i go to read it i get a sort of mental block that just goes :censored: that and gives up trying to read and process it. To the point it's painful.

I never realised till recently how much dyslixica effects my learning :/ My spelling is normally ok (Thank go for auto correct), my reading is terrible which leads to it being very hard for me to learn. 99% of the stuff i've learnt is from either videos with a speaker or by physically doing it.

Anyone else have this issue and how do you get around it?

Can't you speed up the rate at which the software reads to you?

I'd tell your manager it's not really something you're suited for

Yea but when you speed them up they make even less sense!

I'm thinking might have to, have to try all the options first though.

I'm not dyslexic - or at least not much at least - but I have had some kids say that copying text from web sites into Word then changing the text colour, or background or font can help

depends on each individual but it takes some experimentation

might be worth a go - from what the kids said once you find a combination that works it works most of the time

I highlight text and make my own notes.

It takes me ages to do but I have the notes in my own way of thinking and read it many times.

This does work for me better than others but i'm inpatient and it takes x10 longer for me to learn things.

Thinking i'll just have to find videos/podcasts to learn from and hope they don't have accents (I'm terrible with understanding people with strong accents)

I'd be interested to know if the Lexend font could help the OP. I read about it last week and thought it might be worth a try with dyslexic students. It's free in Google Docs.

Interesting, although the sample size and test itself aren't that rigorous, they compared 20 students to Times New Roman, not the same font without the extra spacing.

For blocks of text I use a add on in FF to read the text out to me, that way I can make notes while listening. Do the same in the car sometimes, listen to documents that maybe helpful.

i struggle with it all, i find a lot of Microsoft videos boring and the way they speak makes it even worse! As for text, i have to use an overlay (Rose) for my brain to focus on it long enough for it to make sense.
