maxrebo Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Just setting teams up myself, going through all the policies...does anyone know how long the policies take to apply? Is it a case of Log out then Log in?
MartinT Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 They can take a while, depending on the Azure workload. Even adding myself as an owner to a Team so that I can bulk move files can take 1-2 hours. 1
maxrebo Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I need to hide the "Chat" tab on the menu on the left - could someone tell me which policy it comes under (ive disabled it in the "Messaging Policy" but it still shows. As it stands they can message all staff, which wouldn't go down well!

If a student one make sure its applied to students as by default the 'EduStudent' policy Microsoft creates isn't. I created my own policy and applied that to students.

I guess this is pulled from AD/Office 365 so it would mean changing in there? or is there another way in Teams where you can do an alias?

We use Mr J Bloggs for example so students (and staff) see this in teams.

Full name - I thought it might be coming from here, i will change this I think. Any way of hiding their email address?

Max as well as disabling chat you can remove the Chat icon from the right hand side under Team Apps > Setup Polices Create a new policy for your students and remove the chat app out of it.
RobFuller Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 When applying policies, can you apply to a group or do you have to apply to individual users? I know can be done en-mass but I want to avoid repeatedly applying the setting to new students and applying to the group would make this automatic. Interested to know how others are doing it. Thanks
MartinT Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Teams is our key pandemic remote teaching solution and I have been doing training, helping departments with trial video calls, making student helpsheets etc. We're just about ready but giving IT support from home will be somewhat novel. We're watching the news and waiting. 1
Gongalong Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 I was expecting a Class type team to automatically set student chat to be moderated as per this link, but I've tested with a student account and can seemingly chat freely in a Class team: "Teachers moderate student conversations and who can post where." https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/choose-a-team-type-to-collaborate-in-microsoft-teams-0a971053-d640-4555-9fd7-f785c2b99e67 Can you set moderation via a messaging policy? Although I'm not sure teaching staff will want to moderate every bit of chat in a team, and we're being up front with student that they need to abide by the acceptable use policy.
MartinT Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 I think education is always better than enforcement. We have just done the basics to prevent students from creating Teams. 1
Gongalong Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Could you do that through a policy in the admin center, or does it need to be via PowerShell?
Gongalong Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Found it. PowerShell, but straightforward to do https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/admin/create-groups/manage-creation-of-groups?view=o365-worldwide Trying to disable Calls now. I seem to have disabled everything in the global Calling policy, but it's still enabled for the moment...

I seem to have disabled everything in the global Calling policy, but it's still enabled for the moment... Is it the case PowerShell is the 'only' way? I'd always thought of PS as a useful tool to help in many ways, especially with automated tasks, but it doesn't feel right if it's the sole means of implementing a policy.
Gongalong Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 It does appear to be the only way. The Teams Admin Centre is also rubbish for making mass user changes. Seems to be targeted at just the odd user change here and there, so presumably they then expect us all to be PowerShell experts... Calls has now disabled for me. A waiting game.
MartinT Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Using the Teams Admin Centre you can only apply the policy to (I think) 20 or 25 users at a time. Very annoying.
3s-gtech Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 The Teams Admin Centre appears to be designed for: Form over function Changing settings one user at a time Staring perplexed at the screen as to why they did it that way. It still beats the old SfB admin centre, which is slightly more advanced than the MFA admin centre. These things will improve in time and with feedback!
