Domain controller physical location

Can anyone see any issues with where I’m going to place my domain controller.

 

Currently it is next to the router and switch.

 

I want to plug it in on the other side of the building several switches along the line.

 

Can anyone see any issues with this or is this alright.

DC bandwidth is generally low, but it does want as few hops as possible, traversing as few devices and links as possible to connected devices. It’s not ideal separating it that much from your core - probably worth a test to see what impact it may have.

It should be fine. Many organisations don't even have them on the same site.

 

When I was in the UK our MAT had domain controllers in a central server room.

 

At my current company we have all servers including DC in a central data center. That is over 1,000km away from one of our offices.

Number of clients / users will have some effect. But generally I think you’d be fine. What’s the connectivity between switches like? We tried and use a couple of connections in a team for our primary schools where possible.

I'd be much more concerned about physical security and environment than connectivity.

Thanks everyone. The router is next to where the phoneline comes in and frankly that room is in a terrible state. It gets hot, dusty, etc.

 

I have a server cabinet in a secure office so thats why I plan to place the server there instead.

 

The server will be linked by two switches connected in places by fibre.

Location doesn't really matter. large AD sites will have dcs separated by wans. as long as the link to it is reliable you'll be fine.

In the 15 years of working in IT and god knows how many sites I've managed I think only 1 of them I've physically worked in has had the DC on site (purely because the site had the data centre in), even now most places I work unless in and out of a school then the DC is remote to that site and it's never caused an issue.
