I know that this has already been discussed a number of times but i need a slightly different thing.

I need a way of checking what hardware is inside all of the machines in a domain. ideally this needs to run silently and then create a report. I need it to be run from the server and the report created on the server. Ideally with a way of stopping it running on the same machine twice.

I know i am being very demanding but there must be something out there that can do it...oh yeah and free!!!

any help would be great.

It comes up with most of the serial numbers, all software installed and you can even tell it to search for specific registry entries, and if you add it to the logon script, as well as the machine startup script it logs username logon and logoff details aswell so you can find out who was on machines from a central mysql database with the web interface

I have now been able to spend some time reading the admins guide to this piece of software and it is a bit much. I just need something small i can run from the server to create a log for each machine's hardware spec.

Please help, if i dont find it this could be a long tediious day of auditing manually:(

although the other ideas are far better, i had 2 days to audit the school and this is what i came up with, using cpuz and winaudit.

created msi to install both on all machines.

following batch files run at start up

if exist "C:\Program Files\cpu-z\Oct07" goto :eof ELSE

c:
cd "C:\Program Files\cpu-z\"
cpuz -html=\\server\share\audit\cpuz-%computername%

c:
cd "C:\Program Files\cpu-z\"
md Oct07

if exist "C:\Program Files\WinAudit\October07" goto :eof ELSE

"C:\Program Files\WinAudit\WinAudit.exe" /r=gotnbMpmi /o=html /f=\\mb4001-02\public$\audit\winaudit-%computername%.ext /m=This Machine Is Currently Being Audited, Please Wait........

c:
cd "C:\Program Files\WinAudit\"
md October07

Will create 1 html file for the cpuz document and 3 for winaudit.

Like i said nothing special but does the job.

Our helpdesk, Ilient Sysaid does all this wonderful stuff. It deploys across the network. Inventories all machines, gives a lovely overview. Tracks software and hardware changes. Installs VNC and other stuff as well.

Free to try for a month from Help Desk Software by Ilient, and you can export the data to csv and PDF. We loved it so much its now our Software, Hardware, Helpdesk, Licensing, VNCing system.

I'll attach a rough screenshot of what it looks like if you would like.

EDIT: It can be installed via logon script, and removed the same. Create a dummy account with no password, add the logon script, and login all the machines, wait 10-15mins, turn them off and away you go.

Are they turned on? :p

:D Plus there are a couple of things that might be the cause. Firewall? Erm...crap there are some other simple things. Spiceworks has a list of these things in the help I believe.
