Popular Post chrisakak9 Posted October 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted October 4, 2019 (edited) Hi all, I just wanted to share a script i have created for anybody having issues with the papercut print client randomly closing and not running. This is a major issue if you are using account selection or scripting that produces popups like me. I have therefore created the attached vbs script and assigned it as a schedualed task to check if its running and lauch it if not. I use the triggers for every 5 minuets, on logon and resume from standby. Under windows 10 you will also need to add an AppLocker rule to allow this to run. My staff laptops leave the school with teachers so I also have the script copy to the local macine with GPP (papercut programs folder as it will be blocked from running in the root C: drive) The only thing you will need to modify is the print server hostname on line 28 and the papercut installation path if you are using an older version of papercut which resides its client in Programs Files (x86), everthing else should work as is but that is down to you to check before deployment. The script will also work to launch the client at user logon (some code is simply here for testing and development at this stage)PapercutClientCheck.vbs Edited April 26, 2022 by chrisakak9 5
ryanplym Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Does anyone have any idea why it is closing randomly? I have phoned papercut and they say they are not aware of the problem. I have done everything they have suggested such as upgrade to the latest version etc.
thimon Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Sounds like network connection dropping out? It the client is being run from the Print Server, which is what PaperCut recommend from memory.
ryanplym Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Thanks Thimon. I have tried installing the application locally on the PC and also load from the server at startup. It works great when the user logs in for the first time, then the application just crashes out randomly. Although the fix from chrisakak9 is putting a plaster on the problem, it does work really well and for that I am greatful! 2

I know some others were having this issue and this was the quickest way to resolve it I could find. I tried all sorts of remedies at my school, DNS was fine, network didn't seem to be the issue, local client or remote both had the same results. I no longer work for the school (I now work for Inventry) and dont have the facilities to further test the script or research the issue further but I will try to support where possible. Regards Chris
ITGURU Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 We've never had issues with it randomly closing, the only issue we get it at first login it doesnt always run the papercut client - same with printers, sometimes they don't map, and a log off and back resolves is. Happens on 2 networks i manage so know it's a bug somewhere!
sahilkhan Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 we have the same issue, the client is running of a shared drive, all windows 7 Machines are fine but the application crashing on windows 10 machine very frequently , so far no permanent solution in sight i guess papercut really need to look at the issue
ITGuyNW Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Sorry for reviving a 6 year old thread... Is this still an issue? I am trying to deploy the client however on wired connections it seems fine but on Wi-Fi it stops responding. Would the above VBS still work as VBS is semi disabled in Windows 11? We are on prem GPO.
