G Suite - shared mailboxes

How are people who use G Suite dealing with shared mailboxes?

 

Are you using Collaborative Inbox with a Group, per Google's suggested setup? With its completely different interface etc...? Or are you doing something else?

We're using standard mailboxes and delegating access to them accordingly. When we migrated to Gmail last year I wondered if this would be sufficient, but people seem to be getting on okay with it. Horses for courses, I suppose. We only ever have two or three delegates, rather than large teams.

How do you go about delegating access? There doesn't seem to be anything like that in the admin panel? Or is it done in the account itself?

You can do that from the account itself. The delegate would then need to confirm it. There's no way to do it via Google Admin.

 

Alternatively, if you have GAM, it's just

 

gam user add delegate

 

Doing it via GAM will also mean that there's no approval needed by the end users. It just gets done for them.

I'm not sure if this has been addressed in any recent updates, but in order to get it to work from behind our proxy, I have to first run this command in the cmd session:

 

set https_proxy=https://ip:port

Btw, you may want to install GAMADV-XTD3 instead of the old version of GAM. It has a lot more features and won't be deprecated soon.

 

GAMADV-XTD3 is built with Python 3; as Python 2 support ends on 2020-01-01, this is the version of Advanced GAM that new/existing users should install.

As above I create a service account, for example [email protected] then just delegate via GAM

 

GAM will become your best friend for your admin workflow
