Hello all,

I am trying to purchase a new OVS-ES agreement, so that we can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro on our workstations and Server 2019 for our VMs.

I have got some quotes back, and most seem similar in pricing. However one supplier has only quoted for the following item (2UJ-00011) MICROSOFT DSKTPEDU ALNG LICSAPK OLV E, whereas the others have the another item on the quote along the lines of Microsoft WinSvrDCCore ALNG LicSAPk OLV 16Lic.

The supplier who quoted the single item MICROSOFT DSKTPEDU ALNG LICSAPK OLV , has said (on email) we would be fully licensed to use Server 2019 but I am not confident they have this right. Anyone have any input in this?

Thanks

FWIW - I am no MS licensing expert (not sure if such a thing even exists, as it's so complicated), but below is what we are licensed for with our OVS-ES agreement (and italics, what I think it means)... I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in...

WinSvrSTDCore ALNG LicSAPk OLV 16Lic F 1Y Acdmc AP CoreLic = 2 (This licenses us for 2 servers) Server licensing can be complicated though...

SQLSvrStd ALNG LicSAPk OLV F 1Y Acdmc AP = 1 (This licenses us to run a full SQL instance on 1 of the servers)

SQLCAL ALNG LicSAPk OLV F 1Y Acdmc Ent UsrCAL = 30 (This licenses us to have 30 FTE staff access the SQL instance (for SIMS))

DsktpEdu ALNG LicSAPk OLV F 1Y Acdmc Ent (Education Bundle) = 30 (This licenses us to have 30 staff use computers with Windows 10 and MS Office on). The CALS for general access to the server are included in this I believe.

Good point about the SQL licensing, as we have a locally hosted SIMS. Not sure if that is a full blown version of SQL or the express version though so will need to check that out.

Hi

Best to phone Civica customer support and get them to advise on what you need, then make you know where you stand always found them very helpful.

MICROSOFT DSKTPEDU ALNG LICSAPK OLV would only cover having the latest version of windows on the client, and the cal to access Server 2019, but would in itself not allow you to install 2019 as that should be a different code from my understanding.

Some suppliers do all 3 components (Office, windows upgrade and cals) in 1 bundle, others in the 3 separate ones depending on which works out cheaper at the time.

If your servers have a datacentre licence that has software assurance as part of your ovs-ees, then that would allow you to upgrade them to 2019.

Thanks for all your replies.

I don't think we will be going down the Office 365 route as we're invested in Google for Education already so would prefer this path. Unless I am mistaken and can get licenses more cheaply?

Our needs are fairly basic I think.

FTE count of around 160

Require: Windows 10 Professional, Office 2019, Server 2019 and SCCM.

I've been told our SIMS server can remain as is and is running on Microsoft SQL Server 2014, so no additional licensing upgrade required.

Hi @house19

(2UJ-00011) MICROSOFT DSKTPEDU ALNG LICSAPK OLV E - This covers you for Windows, Office and the Core Cal Suite based on your FTE

Microsoft WinSvrDCCore ALNG LicSAPk OLV 16Lic - This covers 1 server with up to 16 cores for unlimited virtual machines, if you're not highly virtualised you might be better going for stacked Server Standard licences.

SQL would need additional licencing.

Feel free to give me a shout

Here is my proposed new hardware kit for upgrade.

3 hosts

Each host will have 2 Intel Xeon 5118 CPUs in them.

Total VMs I am looking to have between the 3 new hosts is 10.

Does this mean I would need 6 x Microsoft WinSvrDCCore ALNG LicSAPk OLV 16Lic? Which might be overkill.

Can I instead get 10 x WinSvrSTDCore ALNG LicSAPk OLV 16Lic? As that will also cover 10 VMs?

Or perhaps even cheaper, I can get 36 x WinSvrSTDCore ALNG LicSAPk OLV 2Lic?

That will cover both the number of cores and VMs...

What hypervisor are you going to use? I'm no licensing expert but surely by using either VMWare or HyperV Server ( the free version) and keeping the VMs under 16 cores you'd only need a single license per server. Also doesn't Standard edition include licenses for 2 VMs

I would be using VMWare.

I was basing the required licenses by physical cores, and as each server has 24 cores I would need 36 licenses in total (each server licence covers 2 cores)? Unless I have this mistaken. Even more so as johnlevis has mentioned I would require more. :dizzy::confused:

I was once told that if you have more than 1 hypervisor you need to make sure that each is licensed to run all your VMs to ensure you are covered in case of failure. I just use Data centre on my 3 hyper Vs to cover this

Cost of MS server = random number + random number of hours trying to work out what you need * hourly wage

That’s hardly a formula exclusive to MS. And even if a server OS is FOSS, the “random number of hours trying to work out what you need * hourly wage” part of that equation still applies.
