PlantHead Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 LTSC is designed for stability - no new features or functionality will be added to the OS Security and bug fixes will still be applied. This is why you don't get Edge in LTSC you only get IE11 - IE11 is not going to get new features only security patches The benefit of LTSC is that you can treat it like XP or Windows 7 - deploy it and forget about it for 3+ years The negatives are that new features are missing If you deploy 2016 LTSC to a shiny new Surface Pro then certain features will be missing such as most of the touch functionality which only came out in later feature releases. It is a similar story with applications like One Drive - Files on demand is great but isn't included in LTSC 2016, You either need to upgrade to LTSC 2019 or accept that you won't be able to roll out Files on demand. Additionally newer hardware isn't supported. If you are using LTSC from 2016 and you buy new workstations you may find that the new CPU's aren't supported since drivers haven't been released for the LTSC versions. The same goes for all new hardware and peripherals. Basically the bottom line is that if you think you will install your workstations and then not touch them, go with LTSC. Microsoft don't want you using LTSC. 1

5nowman Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 This does slightly worry me. I would have thought say Dell would release drivers. e.g. Windows 10 Pro drivers would work with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC? For say new Optiplex models etc
Primus Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 The whole point of LTSC is it's for systems that are static - it's not for general purpose systems (according to Microsoft). Hence why there are numerous downsides to using it.
