Shortcut Error on first log on (Disk is full)

Hi all,

 

I'm experiencing an issue which only affects users the first time they log in to a new device which they don't have a local profile on.

 

A small window appears as soon as they sign in saying 'windows could not create the shortcut. check to see if the disk is full first log in'.

 

I have checked event viewer but there doesn't seem to be any entry for it.

 

I can't pinpoint where this is coming from.

 

We have a redirected desktop GPO for users, with share permissions restricting users putting anything on the desktop but I can't see why this would cause this error as nothing should be creating a shortcut at first log on.

 

We don't have this error message on Win7 clients with the same redirection GPO applied.

the local event log should tell you what file couldn't be created. I assume you're using Windows 10

Could it possibly be the Edge shortcut that Windows 10 creates on user's desktops? We've disabled this via GPO:

See below - I added to a computer GPO that applies to all our Windows 10 PC's. The full key path is:

 

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Thanks for the help but when I go into the Group Policy Editor, I do not have "Registry" listed under "Windows Settings." This is for a local Windows 10 Pro 21H1 x64 PC (not part of a domain).

Your looking in the local group policy editor there which will only apply to the PC your working on.

 

Open the group policy management console on a domain controller and you should get the same options as in my screenshot.

Yes, I edited my post. The computer I'm needing help with is not part of a domain. It is a standalone Windows 10 PC in a workgroup.

Ahh i see, If it’s just for one PC open Regedit, go to the reg path and add the same info in.

I actually tried that before I posted on this forum. Adding it to the Registry did not make any difference. After adding the above info into Registry, I restarted the workstation and it still won't allow creating shortcuts.

What’s the issue your having exactly? Being in a workgroup it sounds like you might have a different issue to the original post and suggestions.

When trying to place a shortcut of shared folders on a Windows 10 PC (part of the same workgroup), I get:

"Windows could not create the shortcut. Check to see if the disk is full."

It is not a disk issue as there are 400 GB of space available.

Strange, probably not a helpful error as it can’t be storage related.

 

Is that when your logged as an local admin or standard user and manually creating a shortcut? Can you create a different type of shortcut such as to a website?

 

Attach a screenshot might be able to get a better idea of what it could be.

It is the administrator account. I can't create shortcuts, period. Doesn't matter if it is a file, folder or a website shortcut. When try to drag a website shortcut to the desktop, I get the "Access Denied" error even though it is the administrator account.

So, I created another administrator account on the same computer and tried to place the shortcuts to the shared folders on the desktop. Did not have any issue; which tells me it may be the user account...may be corrupted.

Yes sounds like it might be permissions related or a profile issue. Does event viewer show any errors related?

 

With the other admin account you’ve created you could either use that from now on or delete the local profile of your original account (backup any files you want first), then login and it will re-create the local profile hopefully free of any issues.

That's the weird part, the Event Viewer did not show anything regarding access/permissions. Thank you for being patient and I appreciate your help.

Event viewer isn’t always helpful, probably was something profile related by the sounds of it.
