Redirected Start menu not appearing

I have removed all the built in Apps during my deployment process.

I have removed the Start Layout completely.

Trying to redirect the Start Menu using Group Policy.

 

Gone into User config>Policies>Windows Settings>Folder Redirection>Start Menu

 

Under Target : Set it as Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location

Under Settings : Removed all ticks

 

Copied the start menu from a Windows 10 machine and stuck it in a shared folder on a server, giving users Read/Execute permissions. Added that path to the GPO.

 

Doesn't work. All I get is a short menu showing built in Apps. Someone please tell me where I am going wrong?

I'm doing this from memory so some things may be a little vague...

 

Log on as a test user, let the redirection apply, then log on with an admin account and look for events with folder redirection as the source in the application event log (I'd give you event IDs but I can't remember what they are!).

 

Might be worth checking share permissions (not NTFS permissions) too?

I checked the Event logs but the only Group Policy event in there states that Group Policy was successfully applied.

 

I have checked the Share permissions. I have 'Everyone Read'. This is the same as the redirected desktop and that works fine.

Yes double checked it again now

So you mean delete the local profile copy on the machine using delprof2 then try again? Will try it tomorrow.

Even deleting the local and roaming profiles, I still get no redirected start menu.

 

Is someone please able to shed any light on this?

Hey,

I don't know if this is a crazy way of doing things but we redirect our start menu's to the local machine.

Our accounts are using Local Profiles.

We have a group policy that sets the permissions on the folder and then during the task sequence any software that is installed it creates a shortcut in the appropiate start menu (Majority of our software is installed using PSADT).

We then have the Start and Taskbar layout saved on the server

 

 

 

 

We are running 1803 at the moment and have been doing it this way for a few years.

Try unticking 'Move the contents of start menu to new location' box. This setting along with the read only share permissions will prevent the shortcuts from being copied to the new location and may be the cause of your issue.

Tried that, didn't help.

 

I have run GP Results and I get a strange error in there stating Folder Redirection failed. There is no "More Information link" even though it refers to one.

So for my test user I have stopped using roaming profiles and opted for a local. I can now get the Start Menu to redirect correctly. I have nothing in the Tiles section except Microsoft Edge. Is there any way to remove Edge from the Start Tiles please?

That's the point, I don't want any tiles. I have applied a blank layout XML but edge still appears.

We had an issue with this (xml not applying) this registry policy sorted it, applied to W10 machines.

We are experiencing similar issue. Redirected Start Menu is not updating with new links/folders for Windows 10 but for windows 7 it is fine. We do use roaming profile but I have removed the roaming profile for my test user. It may be there initially when I started to test it. I think I will remove the profile and try again....

I like to give Auth Users full control to the folder share to test if it’s a permissions error.

 

Also for me I had to create a folder in the share called Programs and dump the shortcuts in there. They then appeared.....

Thank you for the suggestion. We eventually decided to use local start menu which seem to be working... It will be pain to add short cuts later but we will deal with it...
