Jawloms Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 HP Desktop 280 G2 SFF. If I shutdown a computer by going through the start menu, when I press the power button it boots back up fine. If I shutdown a computer by going through the start menu, but then try and WOL it using Impero it tells me it can't find a boot device. Without turning the computer off, if I simply press CTRL+ALT+DEL then it boots fine. I've done this; http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-10/200832-wake-lan-issue.html#post1714741 I've checked the registry on an affected computer and "HiberbootEnabled" is set to 0. Any thoughts please? Stuart
PyROm Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 Check the bios to see if there is a network boot order, this is separate from normal boot order. When it wakes up from WOL it will search for boot devices from the network boot order. 1
Jawloms Posted April 17, 2019 Author Posted April 17, 2019 The closest I can see is in Advanced -> Power-On Options, which says "Remote Wakeup Boot Source" and it's set to "Local Hard Drive". There certainly isn't anything called "Network Boot Order" or similar. Stuart
DJ-1701 Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 Unfortunately, WOL from a full shutdown is not something that Microsoft support now... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/impero-direct-support/195250-w10-spring-creators-update.html#post1669561 1
DrBeaker Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 Unfortunately, WOL from a full shutdown is not something that Microsoft support now... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/impero-direct-support/195250-w10-spring-creators-update.html#post1669561 Good info, my new thing for the day. We disable hibernation, fast startup etc. We have WOL start, restart, shutdown and sleep is the only power mode we have enabled.
Jawloms Posted April 18, 2019 Author Posted April 18, 2019 But it's the fact it states it can't find an OS on the hard disk which gets me. Boot Device Not Found Please install an operating system on your hard disk. Hard Disk - (3F0) F2 - System Diagnostics For more information, please visit: http://www.hp.com/gp/techcenter/startup That isn't telling me it's trying to boot from the NIC and failing. I'd say that it's trying to boot from the HD but can't see the OS. I've checked the NIC driver in Windows and all seems to be set correctly.
chazzy2501 Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 (edited) I've seen in some NIC drivers that they can disable/ignore WOL on shutdown, also some behave this way if the don't allow this to wake the computer is checked. Both Driver things. EDIT some years ago (like a decade) I updated a suite of Fujitsu PCs with new NIC drivers and WOL stopped working I was surprised that a driver could stop WOL from working as it feels more low level than the OS. I'm assuming that the driver can pass instructions to the NIC that it obeys even after a power down. WOL is an issue for me anymore as now that I have a Unifi switching network WOL isn't supported! yay! Edited April 18, 2019 by chazzy2501 1
Jawloms Posted April 18, 2019 Author Posted April 18, 2019 BIOS updated, no different. All driver settings appear to be set correctly under Advanced and Power Management. I'd like this to work as we fire up the PCs in the middle of the night, tell them to do Windows Updates and then shutdown again. At the moment I'm going to have classes of kids coming in to screens saying the PC can't boot. Argh!
chazzy2501 Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 so, WOL is working but is loading the wrong boot item. I see from other posts that hard drive is selected for a WOL boot, maybe it's looking for an efi boot not a legacy? if you do a replicated bios (bios menu replicate) it'll save out text document to a usb stick, you maybe able to discern what its doing in that. (you can edit the document and replicate it back:) ) it's all plain text.
Jawloms Posted April 23, 2019 Author Posted April 23, 2019 so, WOL is working but is loading the wrong boot item. I see from other posts that hard drive is selected for a WOL boot, maybe it's looking for an efi boot not a legacy? Could be, I'll check that out. if you do a replicated bios (bios menu replicate) it'll save out text document to a usb stick, you maybe able to discern what its doing in that. (you can edit the document and replicate it back:) ) it's all plain text. Never even heard of this! Any pointers on how I do this? Thank you Stuart
chazzy2501 Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 if you pop a usb stick in the machine (fat 32, small one if you can find one) then go to replicated setup in the bios you can choose to replicate the current bios. this will save a file to the usb stick. Its just a text document that you can browse in plain text. (and alter) 2
Jawloms Posted April 24, 2019 Author Posted April 24, 2019 then go to replicated setup in the bios I don't have that. It's an HP 280 G2 SFF if that makes any difference. Stuart
sigma Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Posting here rather than an email (as we work together) in case anyone else can shed any light on this update. On the one in the meeting room, (which I have otherwise tinkered around with earlier), I can get it to work by removing (and replacing), the power lead after shutting down, but before sending the magic packet. PC boots perfectly. However, if I shutdown and sent the magic packet again, I get the error. It only works if I remove the power lead before sending the magic packet. I got the idea from here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/HP-290-G1-boot-problem-with-wake-up-on-LAN-WOL/td-p/6760545 Can't seem to find a permanent fix though. I'll try and remember to bring a small usb in with me tomorrow.
Jawloms Posted April 25, 2019 Author Posted April 25, 2019 maybe it's looking for an efi boot not a legacy? Switched to secure boot, turned off legacy, all works now. Thanks for everyone's help. Stuart
