Sony reveals PlayStation 5 specs

The bluray drives used in those new devices (xb1s, ps4, ps5) is far nearer laptop end - you're talking £20 for a typical laptop drive compared to 70-80 for desktop type you got in the xbox 360 and original xb1.

Still, the one bad thing they can't seem to shake off is storage. 1TB? That's 4-5 AAA games. Unless their hedging bets on future streaming services, you can also add an external drive to that bulk so you can actually have a reasonable array of games ready to play.

I think this will force Sony to match the Series X with the BluRay Model and undercut with the cheaper version.

This is where it will be interesting to see what Microsoft does with the alleged "Xbox Series S" model which looks like it'll essentially be using the Series X AMD architecture, but without a disc drive and similar to Xbox One X performance levels, at a max of 1080p. The rumour is that they'll be announcing it at their E3 replacement event next month.

 

Kinda makes sense to have a 4K device for those living room TVs that have it, and a 1080p for those of us (a lot of us) who don't have 4K TVs or don't have 4K in other rooms. I don't use my Xbox on a 4K screen, so if I can get 1080p/60fps with the RDNA2 ray tracing and visual bump, I'd be very tempted. I think I've had the same game that I don't play in the Blu-Ray drive now for at least 18 months!

I recon you could get up to 8 AAA on 1B (there aren't many games breaking the 100gb install... yet).

And I remember seeing an article somewhere about how SSDs allow for game installs to be smaller as devs drop in a lot of duplicate files to keep assets for the same level/area in the same drive sector.

Depends on the game. My 1TB nvme games drive is full - GTAV, RDR2, Battlefront2, Last Jedi, Witcher 3 and a couple of the Borderlands games. They're only getting bigger - assuming higher texture qualities used too (I imagine PS5 would be similar in size to PC for that). And yeah, I think the diskless is 2TB and disk is 1TB but even so, the games still need installing and don't run from disk ever.

I did actually wonder if they might step it up a notch to £450 for digital and £550 for physical just to try and push people away from physical so they can maximise profits from the digital store and any potential future subscription plans. I think a ~£100 difference between physical and digital is likely for sure though.

 

I prefer the fact that Sony is making a clear distinction between the PS4 and PS5 generations by not pushing cross-gen compatibility and muddying the water with less powerful versions of their latest console in the way Microsoft seems to be with the rumoured Lockheart variant. I think that'll give Sony an advantage when it comes to creating games that fully utilise the new hardware.

Sony sets the price of some PS5 launch titles at £70

 

Sony has confirmed UK pricing for the PlayStation 5 launch lineup - and some of the games cost £70.

 

Demon's Souls, Destruction AllStars, and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition all cost £69.99.

Nice price to be fair! I was contemplating getting a new graphics card but at this price the PS5 is so much better value.

 

Never bought a full price game myself, always buy 2nd hand.

Dunno, give it a month when the 3000 series cards are about and even the basic midranges like the 1660, which are hovering around £200 will give you parity on performance short of a feature noone seems to be able to tell the difference on

after watching the presentation last night (and finding some things out this morning) ive decided i just dont need one. None of the launch games (or tbh any of the games they showed) is enough to make me buy a console. ff16 looks likke the combat from 15 which i hated, spiderman had enough of that on the ps4 esp the dlc screwball missions, a few horror games (re etc) i wont touch with a barge-poll and the only exclusive ive been that interested in horizon the forbidden west is coming to ps4 makes my choice a lot easier no new console this year for me. the only new game that i was even really interested in was the harry potter one and im not sure i want to be supporting that franchise anymore (sorry to the devs)

I found this piece by Linus on the Wan Show quite revealing. It seems Microsofft are going to offer consumers quite a deal on their new consoles and may have cut off Sony at the knees with their subscriptions:

Sony have said the new Spiderman game is about the same size as Uncharted Lost Legacy which was released at £29.99. New Spiderman is going to cost £52, and that doesn't include the original game if you want that as well its an extra £18. Its early days but the digital PS5 is looking really bad value at the moment

There's always grey-market sites like CDkeys that might at least put some pressure on the e-store prices.

That's a novel way of doing it. Charge full price for the game DLC. Charge DLC price for the full game.

I didn't know Downloadable Content could work without the original game

 

 

 

Sony always keep high store prices and you can always find disk versions for less. So disk version will be better long term value for me, if I actually played games and didn't have a huge backlog.
