Laptop to purchase

Hi

 

We had given a school laptop to a staff and now the staff is leaving and asking if he can purchase the school Laptop .This laptop has windows 7 also with other software licensed to the school.

Please suggest and will i be able to sell the laptop to the staff.

Laptops and windows licences often have 'Educational Discounts' applied which mean selling it on its allowed to the general public.

 

Plus, they think if it fails in 4 years time your still to blame.

Remove the hard drive, leave it up to them to sort out ?

We don't generally do this because:

 

a) They will want support for it until the end of time

b) Rather than just disposing of it like we normally do, we'd have to spend time restoring it to its factory license/removing volume licensed software

c) If it is good enough to continue using, it is good enough to re-issue to other staff

I agree.

 

Tell them they can have the computer for £x, but you would have to sell it to them without the hard drive, or with the drive securely wiped, for Data Protection reasons.

 

And at the point of sale, the school (ie you) would cease to be responsible for anything to do with it... including reinstalling Windows and any software.

It's bad enough with BYOD's that don't play ball with the network, security, filtering etc. Never mind kit I'm not sorry to see go.

 

I remember one WEEE waste disposal company telling us the once if it's stuff like i3's, i5's it might have some value. I had to tell her the stuff we were chucking out was literally way past the end of it's useful life and pretty much falling apart by the time we got it - that is was basically zombie kit just waiting to be killed off.

Previously when we were closing a school we sold off laptops, but we could reformat in bulk and write a document that said "not our fault, no software"

Been reduced to £100 this year :/ Shame as we got another suite to do!

 

At old place we sold off some old laptops to staff (very old ones still had XP sticker), we put Linux on them due to our windows licensing and they had to sign a waver saying if they die or have problems it's nothing to do with us. Sold them for £30 a pop and managed to get a couple decent new PCs out of it.
