How do you... Win 10 Start Menu

Hi,

 

We have been using Windows 10 for a while now, originally I set it up with classic shell for the start menu/programs and used folder re-direct to a file share so everyone gets the same experience (basically works the same as windows 7).

 

I am currently building a new up to date image and was wondering how everyone else manages the start menu? Am I best of sticking to Classic shell or is there an easier way to do it these days?

You can redirect the start menu on the normal shell. Thats what we do and it works well.

Is it just the same procedure as Window 7? had a quick try and it didn't seem to work, although it was a very quick test so could of screwed something up.

I leave it as it is.

 

Use GPO's to lock down places that people shouldn't be going.

 

Use a script to put a folder with all of the shortcuts people need in it on their desktops.

 

They can either go through my folder, or they can search the start menu.

 

Saves trying to get a custom start menu working with each new update as a lot of people seem to have to do.

Yup, same type of redirection as 7 and 8.1 for us. The Start layout is another matter entirely, but the basic folder structure is easy enough.

As above, standard redirected for the main start menu and the start layout xml is just keeping the most-used apps within easy reach

I have just done a standard win 10 start menu redirect for a quick test again and it picks up my file share and apply's the contents but it still shows all the local pc folders/files/programs. Is this right? In Win 7 it didn't. Maybe i'm missing something.

Still playing at the moment, removed some of the crappy windows apps but they came bag when I logged on as another user. Think I need to take a step back and do some research and reading of previous posts on this subject.

I've carried on with the Win 7 Redirected start menu and it is reliable enough but can't figure out how to remove native app shortcuts. I've tried uninstalling them in the past which ended up in a world of pain and despair so would be content with just hiding them to tidy the start menu. Redirected desktop works a dream - I'm half tempted to sack off the start menu all together!

Only by removing the associated Appx package from the OS.
