I'm going.... should be interesting to see how it turns out, being a standalone event rather than a strand in the main conference.

 

Have you seen the timetable for the day? Pretty solidly packed, it starts with a solid hour and a half of speeches.....

That's why they had to add drinks at the end of the day :p

 

I wonder what food/drink provisions will be like during the day, there are plenty of good restaurants nearby but I don't know whether I'll need to go there or not!

Have you been before? Previous events have been fully catered, coffee and pastries to start, tea break with biscuit, and then a hot lunch. If they're only allowing 45 minutes for lunch, you'd be pushed to go out for a meal and be back in time.

It is and it isn't..... yes, there's an amount of trumpet blowing and sales, but a lot of it is an expo on the services that you've already paid for, and have available to you. I find the seminars quite good, as you get a chance to ask questions at the end, and put forward views.

 

For all the intransigence that Atomwide have been famous for, I have seen senior people from the company there answering questions, taking feedback and trying to find solutions for people.

I'll be going. You'll find me at most LGfL events. As for what you've heard, it's not really advertising anything that you aren't already paying for as part of your subscription (There may be a few items here and there, but never a hard sell). The conference is open to LGfL customers only (unless non subscribers are willing to pay for tickets) and it only informs people of the services that they already receive as part of their subscription. A few weeks ago, they held the DigiSafe conference. There was almost nothing advertised at the conference at all in terms of the speakers and seminars. It was a full day of information sharing and highlighting of the real dangers and threats our children face today and what we can do to keep them safe. The annual curriculum conference (this year being held on 25th April) is a full day of CPD and information sharing for teaching staff covering areas that will help them to deliver their teaching and learning and also how LGfL can support that.

 

I also always say, that I am where I am today because of these events and the opportunities to connect and network with the people in the right places who can and do listen to geniune feedback and try to make improvements for the wider community. The vast majority of us are great at complaining about what's wrong with these subscriptions, but never take the initiative to try to put things right. These events are those opportunities. That's why I spend all 4 days at BETT and attend as many other events and exhibitions as I can. These opportunities are vital and I wish more and more IT professionals grabbed these opportunities more often.

 

And hey, it's free if you're an LGfL customer and if you don't get anything out of the day, you get fed pretty well! :p

I should mention that from a work perspective, I obviously can't provide assistance on here as we do have processes in place for support but I will be there from Atomwide to assist on any queries you may have, predominantly filtering/firewall but always happy to chat about any services and obviously feed those back too.

 

Happy to listen to anything that you believe we could improve the tools that we give you, I like knowing that we need to look for a solution!

That's true. I like to think that Freedom2Filter (the native Netsweeper implementation) came about because of about a year of me and other IT managers pushing John for better filtering. We'd been asking for something like that long before John was around but he actually make it happen. @PaddyNewman has done a great job setting it up from Atomwide's end.

 

It looks like the firewall announcement will be as a direct response to issues raised on Edugeek and the new smartbuy products (Meraki, InterceptX, Neverware and soon Adobe) are all actually useful tools tools that schools have asked for and save a good amount of money if schools use them all.

 

I think I've said it before but we were ready to go out to tender at the end of our contract and LGfL had a high bar to reach to keep us but they really did reach that and I believe they will exceed it.

Agreed - it has gotten a lot better. Before it seemed very "we know what's best for you, don't question us".

Hope you guys are having a blast at the tech meet - make the most of the free beers!

 

I had to bail before the end, what were the big announcements / reveals in John Jacksons closing speech?

 

Pros of this year's event IMO? Good venue, good food, lots of user feedback related developments.

 

Cons - Too much time allocated to passive speeches, and not enough time to allow discussion in the seminars.

Ah, OK. I already knew from BETT more line speed upgrades were planned, so didn't miss much. Good news for many, but we already barely touch the sides on a 200MB connection.

Primary and special schools will get 100meg minimum, secondary 500meg, free of charge. Max speed will be 1gig

 

Oi LGfL! Why are special schools not guaranteed the 500 Mbps package? Yes, we usually have fewer students, but given the types of image and video-heavy resources we usually use...
