Cabling Issue

Hi all,

 

I have a bit of a head scratcher for you

 

I have an up-link from a HP ProCurve in Cab A to Cab B which links in to a Cisco 2960 switch which then links in to another HP ProCurve switch, all the Cisco is doing is bridging the 2 switch's and bringing the entire network down to 100Mb while its sat there doing sweet naff all else, however if I link the Cab A up-link patch directly in to the ProCurve bypassing the Cisco (and going ProCurve to ProCurve), I have no connectivity at all and have to link the Cisco back in to the loop, I really cant understand why? I'm sure the HP's are auto sensing so cabling shouldn't be an issue? has anyone got any ideas?

Have you tested the cable? running at 100Mb it will only use 2 pairs, 4 wires. running at Gigabit it will use all 4 pairs, 8 wires.

 

Have you tried forcing the hp's to 100Mb when connecting directly?

 

Also worth checking the length of the run?

What is the length of the cable run can only be 100 meters, this is why the Cisco switch is used so that it boosted the signal. But I would reckon mend getting a tester that can give you the length and also the pair pin outs so that you know what cable you dealing with.

I have no idea what the overall length is, but its not going to be close to 100m, much less. Also the Cisco switch wouldn't be used to boot the signal to the HP switch that sits 2 inches below it I will get my tester out when I next visit site, but it wont be for a few weeks yet.

It could be a crossover cabling issue? The 2920 auto detects a crossover cable maybe your Procurve does not?

Vlan issue? assuming there is physical connctivity just no traffic?

What do the logs say on the switches?

 

How are they configured?
