Moving House Broadband Installation

Hi all!

 

I have bought a new house! Yay! (first time buyer and been in rented for years!)

 

So - quick question -

 

When planning broadband installation, how does this work? I tell current provider i'm moving and which date is my move in date and they sort everything for going live that day? Surely I can't just take over someone else's line whilst they are in the property?

Depends who you're with - I'm with Virgin and they had to cable it, so I told them the move in date and they arranged to come after then to run the cable and get it turned on. Would have thought you'd be extremely lucky to get it live on move-in day whoever the provider though.

Yep. Steel yourself for possibly a few days relying on your 4G connection.

Just tell them the moving date and they will tell you what they need to do and when it is likely to be completed

Last time I moved (copper phone line) I was given a 15 working day lead time for Openreach to activate the line and move services. Just make sure to factor this possible amount of time into any communication you have with your provider - don't leave it too late!

I suppose its not so much the moving date, the question being - can I do anything whilst the current person is in the house as its not my line to take over....

Once you have exchanged contracts then you can contact the utilities to take them on.

 

Before that anything could happen and the sale not go through. The sale has to go through to completion once contracts are exchanged.

Somebody I know had their sale fall through on the morning they were supposed to move last year as contracts hadn't been exchanged.

 

When she later bought again, she exchanged a week or 2 before so she definitely knew she was moving.
