Could someone create an MSI Installer for new Scratch3 Desktop please?

Hi guys,

I deployed Scratch v1.2.1 msi file using SCCM and worked however, I am missing the desktop shortcut. The only way to get to it is by navigating to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Scratch Desktop"

Any ideas?

Yes there is however, primary school children sometimes struggle. Would me a lot more convenient having a shortcut on the desktop.

I will add an option to create a desktop shortcut the next time I update the Scratch Desktop MSI.

In the interim you may be able to use Group Policy Preferences to create a shortcut.

Edit. @Arcath's MSI can create a desktop shortcut...

Sounds good, let me know please when it is ready.

I tried that but it doesn't seem to work. I tried to manually create a shortcut in the installation folder and that brings up a pop-up saying "Windows can't create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?"

I am not sure if this somehow prevents the GPO from creating a shortcut.

I have also created an MSI today. For our specific needs, we take out the Desktop shortcut and add file type associciation for older version of Scratch i.e. sb, sb2, sb3

If anyone wants to try it out, let me know.

Do the Scratch projects actually open in Scratch when a user double-clicks the files?

Hi I was wondering if someone could help with the file association of .sb3 it doesn't default to scratch desktop. I've tried pulling the app associations and I can't find a single line for .sb3

If someone could help that be great.

cheers.

I didn't realise it had been updated by Scratch team but I see it was on 26th June and is now at version 3.4.0.

Hopefully @Arthur / @mansin could provide an updated msi :)

I'd be very grateful for one, planning on deploying this out over the summer.

Thanks!

I've just downloaded the latest installer 3.5.0 and it looks like they've finally added a All Users option in the installer. 3.4.0 didn't have this.

It looks like the /allusers switch works, but can't seem to find a silent one, tried /S /Silent

Anyone have any ideas?

Is v3 still effectively a portable app? All previous versions have been able to install on an admin pc and then copy the installed folder to multiple pc’s or run as a server app on a shared folder as it doesn’t write anything to the registry or any other folder....

I suspect it is but haven't tested, am going to install via sccm using the new version.

Ok so to answer my own question, yes it is still portable.

Download Scratch Desktop Setup 3.5.0

Extract exe using 7zip

Open $PLUGINSDIR folder and extract app-32.7z file

The resulting folder is the portable version of scratch 3.5.

Copy and rename that folder to anywhere you like (local or server share) and run Scratch Desktop.exe

Job done :)

Can I ask what you use to create the msi's ?

for installers that use an exe to bootstrap an MSI, you can right click the .exe and use 7z to extract one.

I'll admit, I have not tried with scratch in any form, so you might just get third party installation systems

No idea if this is a new improvement but just started looking at the current iteration of Scratch Desktop after realising Scratch 2 was a bit old and needed Air! Anyway, after some of the comments on here and looking at the uninstall string in the registry I discovered that, for version 3.6.0:

"Scratch Desktop Setup 3.6.0.exe" /allusers /S

does what we all long for!

you can set default associations with a group policy, on our computers though scratch will still not open projects with a double click, I'm going to update it and see if that is something that was fixed in an update

This is something I'm curious about too as we've observed the same issue, saves a nice chunk of time in class when it works!
