Just taken on a new primary school with Office 365, need basic question answered.

Hi, Over the the break I have taken on a very small primary school that seems to have everything from Mac + Windows servers to G Suite and Office 365. Just trying to get my head round Office 365 first as they are using this for emails.

 

I have not really used Office 365 so I wanted to check / make sure that I create new accounts correctly when asked.

 

How do I check if I just need to create new users at one point, say on the Windows server and it will replicate to office 365? I also noticed Azure in the Admin section. With this being a very small primary school, the onsite server probably is not talking to Office 365 but how do I check?

 

Any other very basic things that I need to check?

Within Office365 admin portal, go to domains i believe it is, and it should say if there a is onsite sync enabled, and when it was last synced, this would probably be the easiest way to check

 

EDIT- dont do that, when you login to admin.microsoft.com, you can add an azure active directory tile to the homepage which will show if there are any directory synchronisations taking place, you can delve deeper and see the server name doing it if there is one.

That's what happened when I left my previous school - they had 3 months notice but didn't bother getting 'something sorted out' until after I left. Due to lots of stuff needing doing before I left - like training staff to use things I normally did - I left a few projects half done - and some wiring was distinctly messy. Whoever took over will have had no idea why this was done this way - and hence will have a lot of extra work to do.

 

I still wonder if the DH remembered about the book of passwords etc that I left behind???

There will probably be an Azure AD Connect sync happening, but that won’t create a mailbox by default. Another Powershell script can do so (it may be scheduled) or it’s done manually. Create the AD account, then sync and create the mailbox.

AD connect automatically creates accounts in Office 365 in our setup to match those in the local AD. But yes...we have created rules for which groups and users it is supposed to do this for. But our setup doesn't assign Office 365 licences to those users automatically...

Other than what? Do you mean are there other means to link O365 accounts to on site AD other than using Azure AD connect?

 

Possibly...such as a third party authentication...such as RM unify...or do you have O365 working in hybrid with an on site server? Or an on site exchange server that has since been removed?

 

So do all your email accounts not have passwords which aspire sync’d to domain? If you change a domain password...does it change the password used for O365?

 

...I’d be wanting to contact previous support method/provider. The scope for messing up and breaking something because it might be something you hadn’t thought of is obviously significant....and time consuming.
