Hi,

I have been asked in school to make sure all portable devices that come into school are bitlocker enabled for security which is fine. However I am having an issue with SD cards. IF the sd card is bitlockered then the camera will not use it but with the SD card not being bitlockered the user cannot delete photos from the card on a laptop to clear unwanted photos.

Does any one know of a way around this?

Thanks.

It may be as simple as 'clear them on the camera itself'. I'm not sure how you'll do it otherwise - delete obviously works as a write operation and your policies look to be set to read only.

Who is using the cameras and with what sort of degree of use? You could have a dedicated "camera" machine that is exempt from the BitLocker policy that people could use to upload the pictures and delete unwanted ones. You could probably get it locked down so that they wouldn't want to use it for anything else.

Though if the only problem is deleting unwanted pictures, I've not seen a camera that can't do this from its menu.

In user/admintemplates/system/removablestorageaccess/ you could make a custom device class for SDCards and have a disallow on write access. So they can't delete but also cant place important documents onto the card.

I've never set a custom class so this may be tricky.

EDIT: reading more closely I see you have a bitlocker rule in place, I though you could still use non-bitlocker devices to read but no write with a policy in place. The above may help in some scenario.

Perfect ill take a look into these. I have suggested deleting them from the camera however it "takes too long". It might have to be the option though. I am also new to the whole GDPR aspect in schools too but if the cameras are going off site would the SD card not need to have some kind of encryption on? As it would have images of children on that perants might not have given full permission for the images to be used.

Short version is, if the camera doesn't support encryption, which 99% of don't, then you can't encrypt the SD.

Here we've switched to cheap encrypted Android phones.

Formatting the card may be quicker, but might have an adverse effect on their longevity.
