Microsoft Teams - Prevent Students Creating Teams

Help - Does anyone know if it's possible to prevent students from creating Teams? Before the latest change to the Teams/Skype Admin Center I remember a setting which you could set to at least only allow admins to create Teams, this was at least better than anyone having the ability. Apparently according to Microsoft this is not possible - lmao How can they be pushing this product into schools if Admins can't apply some basic controls. I have requested a conversation with the person that heads up product development for his product - guessing they won't call me back though

 

I have used powershell to prevent students creating groups using https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/admin/create-groups/manage-creation-of-groups?redirectSourcePath=%252fen-ie%252farticle%252fmanage-who-can-create-office-365-groups-4c46c8cb-17d0-44b5-9776-005fced8e618&view=o365-worldwide (which they originally suggested would prevent users from creating Teams, but it hasn't worked) - only prevents them creating groups in outlook.

 

So any Team power users out there who has worked out a way to prevent students creating Teams?

Yes it's possible, but it's a bit more in-depth. You have to disable the creation of 365 Groups for everyone, create a Group (Teams admin etc) and assign permission to that group to be able to create 365 Groups. I'll have the documentation somewhere, but it's on MS website somewhere.

ok, at least I know its possible now, Microsoft support have been telling me it's not.

 

They did not explain the need to disable group creation for eveyone like u say.

Creating Teams is inextricably linked to 365 Groups and therefore the ability to create them.

Manage who can create Office 365 Groups

 

This will guide you through the process, unfortunately it follows MS clear-as-mud strategy for how to guides. But basically you create a Group for whom you're going to give the rights to create groups, and assign people to that. Then remove access to everyone apart from that group via Powershell magic. its a bit of a PITA, but it does work, I used the same guide, and now only about 5 people in school can create groups, teams etc and things are a lot more organised.

 

PS. If you use someone like salamander etc for 365 integration, remember to add them to the group.

I've just re-read the OP and can see you followed the same instructions I posted. My apologies. Maybe @mukz is correct, but it did work for us. I'll check our licencing on Monday for P1 or P2.

ah, I have this already, was getting some errors so gave up. Well at least I know it can be done.

ah just remembered I only have the P1 licenses for staff as we use their 2mfa facility. That's absurd if i need P1 for students. - the article suggests it's for the people creating groups only, i hope thats the case. Edited November 26, 2018 by 10101010

If you have P1 for staff, you should be able to get "Azure Active Directory Premium P1 for Students use benefit" added to your license for free, if you contact your license provider.

From what i remember you don’t need it for students, and if you are licensed for staff you can get the students p1 licence by contacting your reseller.

We never went down the road of blocking students in the end so i am not 100% if my info is correct

Yup we bought P1 recently and it's on a ratio of something like 15 student licenses free for each staff FTE you purchase
