There is however a quantity of spare network points - for the same cab in the rooms on both sides. I was thinking of getting a quote to pull the available ports from both sides together into one room. Firstly - I'm hoping this is possible as the same cab serves both rooms, but also is this likely to be more cost effective than new cable runs?
Katy Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 Depends on how they are run. If you're lucky they will be routed in a way that your new location doesn't require the cable to be made any longer. Otherwise they'd have to use couplers to extend them, which is usually something to avoid - in that case I'd go with new cables pulled in from the cab.

I'm hoping the cable run will work in our favour as the distance to the cab is actually shorter from the room we hope to create than the further away ones I hope to move points from. (If that makes sense!) In the absence of any cabling diagrams this could prove difficult to get a quotation for the work in advance of course.

You know that in a few years if you pull out the old cables, some new SMT member will want you to put PC's back in the adjacent rooms! Just leave the points in place, run new cabling and just patch in the ones you need. 1
PotNoodleTech Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 If it was one or two I'd say use the existing cables and get them pulled into the new room (if they are along enough) but as it's a new suite - just get new cables run in.
strawberry Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 By the time someone has come out to look, tried to move them, tested them, attempted fixes and then realised that not all work you are better off just paying for a new run and new patch panel. Labour will be the biggest cost and you'll struggle to interest people to come out and do a job with so many variables.
pete Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Run new cabling. Your major cost is time, not materials. It's faster for the contractor to run new known-good cabling than take out old cabling and re-route it. 1
Fazza Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 If you're doing it yourself then have a go pulling them back, if you're getting someone it to do it then run new cables as the main cost is labour and not the cable which costs very little.

It may only be a broom cupboard at the moment but next week it'll likely be the new school library and you'll be moving them back. You can never have too many network points.

msi_school Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Dont worry about switching at the moment you dont need to have all your ports patched in fact is can be a bad idea to have unused ports patched
