Windows 10 LTSB/C

I am looking at upgrading to W10 and not sure if I should go with W10Pro or W10 LTSB/C - I quite like the idea of having a stable version of W10 and not needing to upgrade every 18/30 months

 

Is anyone using W10 LTSB/C in schools and happy with it?

Do you have a volume licensing agreement? If so the choice should be between Edu/Business or LTSC (if you feel inclined to use it). I can't offer much help on the choice - we went Edu and it has worked out okay for around 18 months on the same release (still supported).

Yes we do but I need to make my mind up on the W10 version - I will need to renew the agreement very soon...

We tried LTSB for a few months in 2016 with version 1511. I then tried 1603 CB when that came out and decided that for me to manage Windows deployments, whilst LTSB is easier as it's one deployment in x years, CB provides me with the flexibility to check out the new features and test stability on a new version every six months and deploy it if I chose to. This means that I don't have to wait x years to get a useful feature that has been implemented. I also remember reading somewhere that LTSB is only really designed for specific static-use cases, such as control systems, etc that really need the stability.

We started looking at LTSB, but had some problems getting it to work with some of our software bits (and it was a pain not having some features baked in), so moved on to Edu which is working okay.

LTSB/C is the choice to go for if you want less pain and more stability. Just look at the recent 6 month release cycle to see why not to use the Educational version. Edited November 12, 2018 by supportman

I deploy LTSB 1607 to all devices and have far less issues.

We have both Education Edition and LTSB edition here and we have had far better results with LTSB. I will be rolling it out school wide in the future after the initial year of tests with both.

W10 Enterprise LTSB seem to be stable version. How is the hardware compatibility on LTSB 1607? I think it supports intel CPUs up 7th gen - any one had issues with it?

Works fine on brand new silicon. I have it deployed to a number of seventh gen CAD computers, couple hundred seventh gen Dell Latitudes and a few eighth gen Dell Latitudes. It won't have support for the latest processor extensions, but honestly, whoopty do... The gains will far outweigh the cons. The only thing that could keep you on the Education release is if you're a Office 365 school, then there are up sides to having the Microsoft Store built in to the operating system.

 

It'll be missing some stuff like a calculator app, sticky notes and some other stuff. Microsoft transitioned that stuff into Modern Apps (leaves a horrible taste in mouth just uttering that) and since LTSB/C doesn't ship with them, they're left out. All you got to do grab the binary files from previous versions of Windows for that stuff and work it into your image - problem solved.

Yep I agree with the above. The classic Calculator is still there and you can download classic Sticky Notes here.

Don't know if they've ported the following into the new LTSC release but these come in with 1709 and above...

Not sure what the status of things like Azure Hybrid AD Join and suchlike are like if you got down LTSC but as above more relevant if you're fully integrated with Office 365.

Use the Java version?

You cant buy the java version anymore, we have had to move to the one from the Store and Deploy it using SCCM

 

If you are on LTSB/LTSC then there is no way round this you cant Run Modern Apps on it, as its not designed to be used in this way(ATM machines, Digital Signage etc as per the documentation)
