Opinions on a projector

Hi all. I have never needed to buy a projector before, so I'm a bit out of the loop. I have up to £600 to spend. It's for a drama room, primarily for showing movies.

 

The best I can find is the Casio XJ-V110W from AV Partsmaster for £599. It's WXGA (1280x800) and I would have preferred WUXGA (1920x1200) as the device in that room can output at 1080p. I can't find anything decent at that resolution though. The advantage of the Casio is it's lamp-less and also 3500 lumens, which is decent.

 

Has anyone get any other suggestions?

What is the size of the screen that it will output to?

Is an ultra short throw possible or does it need to be a standard one?

The room has 2 walls of windows with blinds. It gets quite dark when the turn the lights off and close the blinds. Short throw isn't really possible as I've had the mount installed in the centre of the room. It can be moved though.

It's projecting onto a blank wall, ideally it will be as large as possible (as large as I can get it from the centre of the room is fine). The teacher was using an 8 year old spare projector from a desk at the other side of the room and it filled the entire wall, which was great.

Epson projectors might be worth a look.

 

The EB-u05 can be had for a similar price and does 1920x1200. The lamp life is still quite good, and personally, I prefer the image quality on the Epsons to the Casios. Whilst we've not had the model you mention here, we have had a few issues with the Casios.

4,200 lumen WUXGA projector for £200? Not going to be there for long. Grab them while they're Hitachi and not Maxell!

We use the Casio lamp free projectors in all our classrooms, more recently the XJ-V10X. I've found that Stone Computers and Millgate tend to be a little cheaper than AV partsmaster.

We've recently purchased some Casio units from KPMS. They were the cheapest we could find and the projectors arrived the following day

I use the Casio XJ-V10X in most classrooms here. Very bright and very reliable.

 

I wouldn't touch Hitachi with a barge pole now after having to remove 15 x 250N / 300N from service due to the fact they barely lasted two years before going blurry and discoloured.

 

Buy cheap buy twice. This old saying will apply to you if you buy £200 Hitachi projectors. I learned my lesson and Casio bulbless only now.

I would normally agree - this is a £600 projector on a special deal. Depends on which way the OP wants to go in the future - simply providing an alternative option.

 

If the budget was bigger I'd say go laser - we do on all our big spaces now, otherwise I still think a lamped projector is the way to go as my experience of LED has been less than amazing.

We've got 10 Epson EB - 530s and so far they have been fantastic even on ECO mode and direct sunlight on the boards.
