[windows software] Education Open License. License Numbers?

Hi folks,

 

I'm trying to rack my brains as to where I first learned this, but I have a question re. open education licenses.

 

My understanding was that schools only had to pay for a license (for Windows and Office) for staff that worked over 200 hours. Student PCs essentially got the license for free (for Windows and Office).

 

I called the Microsoft Licensing Centre about an unrelated issue, but the guy there said we should be paying for licenses for both staff and students.

 

Did something change, or does he not know what he's talking about? It would be a major issue for us because obviously there's a huge difference between staff, and staff + students!

You mean the EES-OVS where you pay each year based on the number of FTE staff you have. It's not free for student PC's

ES-OVS covers all school workstations in the school based on FTE count, which does not include students into the count as they are not members of staff.

 

It would not of course cover student owned devices, but I doubt that is what you are asking for anyway.

Yes, this is purely just for school owned PCs. Does it cover them for Windows and Office?

It covers any stations your establishment owns regardless if you class them as student or staff (which is why the support guy was confused).

 

You can also install Office on a Mac under the OVS-EES agreement

Just to confirm, you work out the FTE count based on staff who use a computer and work more than 200 hours a year. As long as you licence based on this you can install on as many school owned computers as you like.

Hello all,

 

Did anyone know of the subscription that the original post mentions? I'm trying to arrange the same thing for a school that the previous IT company had not renewed for 3 years.

 

So the school previously had in their VLSC the following:

50x server licences for all versions from 2008 to 2016

100x office licences from old to latest

100x windows versions from xp to 10

 

currently none in there and cannot find the same package from resellers.

 

Apparently this subscription was free and at zero cost to the school.

 

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Not 100% sure what you're asking, but OVS-ES does allow you to have unlimited copies of Office and Windows client licenses (not server), based on the staff FTE count. It's certainly not free though, you have to pay for the staff licenses.

 

(As an aside, the Microsoft "licensing specialist" confirmed he was wrong and apologised!)

The subscription is OVS/ES (Open value Subscription) I can't imagine it wasn't renewed for 3 years, Microsoft would have suspended it. Maybe the reseller was paying it but not billing the school. Drop me an email and i'll see if we can look into it.

When you log into VLSC does it list any expired agreements?

Login to VLSC and go to licenses/relationship summary. I can see all of the agreements we've ever had.

 

Click on the agreement number and it will show you what was bought. If you click on contacts, it should show you who it was bought from.

 

I'm pretty sure that whoever told you it was free to the school has misunderstood something somewhere!

 

If you have no luck with VLSC, I'd head to the finance department.

 

They might have paid for three years up front, so someone had thought it was free for the last two years...

This is what we see from the previous subscription and the school has confirmed that they have never had to purchase anything:

The finance department are '100% sure' they have not paid for this. Their 365 is also free but provided by a different supplier.

Well, they give upgrade licences for free now.

 

I did hear this: " Another benefit of OVS-ES, if you have Office ProPlus on your agreement, is that you can add, at no cost, Office 365 ProPlus for staff and students. This provides the facility for staff and students to install Office on up to 5 devices they own."

If you licence Office pro based on FTE count, you can give staff and pupils Office 365 free of charge.

The whole school have faculty 365 with office apps, pupils have unlimited accounts. its more the standalone office pro, windows OS and server licences i'm more concerned about as a whole package

OK, so you will probably need FTE count of DsktpEdu sku (this includes Windows, Office and the Core Cal Suite as well as SCCM for the workstations) and the appropriate server licensing.
