Any bought any resonably priced computers recently? Where from?

 

We are looking to buy 12 replacement computers for our suite suitable for a primary school - nothing spectacular, 1-2 gb ram, xp pro, amd or intel. Branded or non branded.

We have just purchased 75 desktops. With these specs:

3ghz Intel duel core

1 Gig RAM

80 GB Hard Drive

Includes keyboard and mouse no monitor with 1 year warranty

Geoff, how are you finding the new HP Eco Friendly case design and meddling children? I am put off it as the sample I have its sooo soft and flexible it looks like the kids will just smash that front panel in within minutes of being left alone (Note I don't want to start a behaviour / bad management thread here). The old style solid front was far better. Also less gaps to push gum, coins, wrappers etc through.

The suite in technology has survived for a couple of months without any major damage. Also, being HP kit, you can get replacement case sections. So just order, replace and send a bill.

Thanks for that info Geoff, so by you saying any major damage I take it you have had some. I think out of 300 of the old style cases I've had 1 blanking bay smashed and thats it, I've caught a few catches on the fronts myself so thats my issue not the kids but was very pleased with them.

 

The modular is good but I'm not paying £59 for a case front which is what I was quoted when I asked for a price for one out of interest.

We only use Dell for our desktops; we used them prior to BSF and are happy to continue to use them.

 

There reliable, good business service (Bad home user service from experience), okay prices, however I feel that although they are a bit higher, they do offer a more student proof solution. Such as incorporated chassis locks and the ability to bolt them down to the desks etc.

 

Personally I would only use there desktops in a school/business environment, I would however use there laptops for home use, I fix them myself and found there v v reliable.

 

Average spec for us comes in at just over £300, that includes a

17" TFT

2GB Ramm

80 GB HDD

3.2GHzish Inter Core Quad/VPro CPU

Keyboard and mouse toooooo....

 

This may not be within everyones budget, however, we find compared to previous desktop models which we have tested, we buy once approx every 5-8 years as appose

to buy twice every couple of years, given that the machines have an average of a 3 year NBD warranty.

bought a vostro from dell when they had the free shipping. Came to about £320 for a 2.4 dual core, 2gb ram, DVD±Rw, 3 Year Techinical NBD warranty, 160 Gb Hard drive... etc..

Personally only used the Latitude, Inspirons and XPS models personally, thought the Vostros were aimed for the home market mainly, i like the bit extra power......just in case, plus for ghosting.

 

Whats you thoughts on the Vostros?

We got some HPs from Misco in the end. They have it here on Ebuyer for £236

They seem fairly solid (possibly the power button might be flimsy for some secondary schools – but OK for us). We got these in Jan so it might not be the 'best deal' now. (We actually paid more than that... so it's a good price!)

Well worth phoning up Ebuyer and Misco and asking what they've got that's good - they have various manufacturer’s offers. They are both very competitive and will beat the other's quote, resulting in significant savings!
